Because the OS may be in the middle of flushing data to the drive when you pull it. You need to give it the all clear.
Yes, but not half an hour after the last access. The OS needs to get its job done so that thumb drives and network drives can be disconnected with out a whole long sob story of good byes. What in the world is the OS doing 15 minutes after the last Word file has been saved?

The same goes with iPod, iTunes should just unlock the damn thing, when it has stopped updating it. People should be able to just grab iPod from it's dock with out stupid error messages.
Removable hard drives and iPods shouldn't be auto unmounted, but only give error messages only if you actually do disconnect some data transfer. iPod also shouldn't show that do not disconnect sign when it really is needed.
- Keep a cache of Applications and Utilities folder contents and don't reload the list from disk every time those folders are opened unless the folder has been changed.
These are some great suggestions, especially this one. It would be great to have an option to keep the application icons cached in memory. I have lots of apps in my applications folder and it can be cumbersome scrolling through. I'm hoping this will be improved in Leopard.
In stickies, why cant I save a sticky and open it so it looks like a sticky? And it should be easier to save them. It looks so cool, I want to be able to use it more.
A couple of little niggles really annoy me in OSX, so what bugs everyone else, and do you know of any workarounds?
Here are a few of mine to kick things off -
1) Why oh why, can I not drop files or folders onto a folder in the dock, and have it 'Spring load' open? It just doesn't make sense that this isn't implemented!
2) Why can't Safari take you to a website when you start typing the bookmark name? And while we are on the subject - what if I visited maps.google.com before. If I start typing 'google' into Safari, why can't it bring up maps.google.com as a suggested site from my history? (Not the best example address, but hopefully you get the idea).
3) Why does Mail so often hang for a period of time when bouncing mail? Why can't it just be quietly sent in the background like any other mail?
4) In Safari, why is there not an option to open "_blank" links in a new tab instead of a new window? I know I can use a key combo, but really, is there any need?!
Why not add:
5) Why doesn't Pages complete my sentences for me and find me an agent to publish my works?
I used to pooh-pooh this request, but I have decided it is useful in some circumstances: there are some serial numbers, etc. that only appear in graphics, or in text blocks that for whatever reason are not selectable, therefore not copyable.
Let me have a window open that I can read from in order to type (copy) its information into another window behind it.
A good example would be an About MyApp... box that didn't allow you to select the serial number listed there. I'd like to make that window with the About box float while I transcribed it into a window behind it. A simple right-click "Float this window" would do it (and if the window were already in float status, the command would change to "Unfloat this window."
It could also be designed where if your click in a background window was exactly in a text entry field, the window wouldn't come to the front, and you could type into it without blowing away the front window that you were transcribing from.
No more having to manually adjust the width of the columns so that you can see the full file name and a more efficient use of space as well!
It won't solve it, but here's a little tip to ease the pain:
Double click the column resize button (you know the one at the bottom of a column border) to resize it automaticly to fit all items. And...Hold the ALT key when resizing using the mouse to affect all columns instead of only one.
AGAIN the mounted drive / network resource thing drives me nuts... Just today I have a network resource mounted and the other person shut off their computer... Mine hung there for 5 minutes - nothing would help - ultimately I had to reboot
Mac's are absolutely superior to any computer I have ever used, but this needs to be fixed!

If that would work during a drag-and-drop it would be perfect. Nothing worse than dragging to a column whose folder names can't be identified.
I second (third. fourth, gazzilionth?) your #1 suggestion: spring-open folders in the dock!
And here are my further suggestions:
1. In Mac Classic (OS 9), if you put something in the trash, then changed your mind, there was a Command-Y to send the file back to its original location. They took that away in OS X and I want it back!
2. The keyboard command for Shut Down is Control-eject (my keyboard doesn't have a Shut Down key). Even using thumb and pinkie, I cannot reach those two keys with one hand. I've tried creating a new keyboard shortcut in the Keyboard and Mouse control panel in System Preferences, but that doesn't work. How 'bout an easier-to-reach shortcut, maybe Control-End or Control-down arrow?
I find the Open dialog box pretty cumbersome. Say I want to upload a photo onto the net, I would click select file on any web-site, then the Open box will appear. Firsty I find the UI of this box pretty awful, but finding files is also difficult, particularly photos.
What I'm getting at is that the Open/Save box needs an iWeb media style box within it to make it easier to find files, such as photos so I can search via Photo Album rather than by Roll Number, which can make finding photos time consuming.
I had hoped the Open/Save box would be improved along with the Finder, but looking at Think Secret's screenshots this wasn't the case. Oh well. I still hope for improvements to this for Leopard.
Does anyone know if Quick Look works in Open/Save dialogs?
I really like Sherlock. It just needs some more spit and polish and it would be a great app if the features it tries to have actually worked. Like the movie poster window and the movie trailer window in the movies tab. Would be great, but I think Apple has killed this app.
Safari needs a "Go" button to the right of the address bar.
The equivalent of Key Caps needs to be simpler to get to.
Fonts need a font menu, not that crazy palette.
There needs to be a "return to normal text" keyboard shortcut. If you paste in some bolded text, and then type following it, the text you type is still bolded.
Most important, there still is no integration of the OS and web pages. For example, to go to the next page of this thread I need to interact with the site, not the OS.
At least they put a Search in Wikipedia in the contextual menu.
If you try and make a New Folder in the Finder, the contextual menu won't let you unless there is white space to click on.
In column view, columns still jump to the right even if all you are doing is selecting the folder.
There is no automatic resize of columns. I hate that.

Also, maybe some simple little icons you could add (also viewed in list view, like an 'X', '!', 'a skull' etc ...).
It would help enormously when you have a gazillion files to be sorted and edited.
