Why would I want to replace my fairly decent DVD player? Or if I had a 200 DVD jukebox why would I want yet another drive taking up space in my aTV? Or if I had a media center + NAS and had ripped all my DVD.

BR drive maybe but DVD is not required/desired for many folks. For me the only thing missing from aTV is 720p downloads from iTunes.

I agree with you on this one Vinea. I don't see a standar DVD drive offering that much to the current AppleTV. I have an AppleTV (with upgraded HD) and it's excellent. I have a posh DVD player that I wouldn't want to replace. I would hewever be more than happy to have another AppleTV if it had a built in Blu-ray player.

Why would you want a 'standard' Blu-ray DVD in an appleTV but not a standard DVD player - surely you would want an excellent/posh Blu-Ray device?

I am just about to get a new plasma for our new kitchen - I don't want lots of devices cluttering up said kitchen & an appleTV that played DVDs would be perfect - one small box to play DVDs & the stuff on my HDD - great

But let me ask you: If someone has a bunch of DVDs, will they also already have a DVD player? And if so, why would they want two?

They don't want two devices, that's the point. They get rid of their old clunky DVD player, and go cool, minimal with style. One device for all your media, that's the point. 150GB??

reduce clutter/cords by replacing the old one, not keeping it around.

I guess when I hear "Blu-Ray" it reminds me of a raygun.

    Wasn't Steve Irwin killed by a blu-ray?

I know, and I'm sorry, and that shouldn't be funny, but for some reason it is.\

What I don't get is why so many people don't agree with you. BR-DVD and HD-DVD hold about 20+ GB of audio and video data.

Totally agree. I'm really just saying Apple TV needs an optical drive (to stick your existing disks in), the Blu-ray part is a future wish. Anyway it's the drive part that is Blu-ray, not the downloads.

yes, "say what you want" but if anyone disagrees with YOU they are wrong.

didnt you have a link to a transcript of the steve/bill interview a few weeks back? did you actually read it? or see it? the part where Steve said HIS vision of where Apple was going was with MULTIPLE devices. whereas (if memory serves) it was BILL who said "oh no stick it all in one device" so.. yeah, you want Apple to go down a microsoft route?

if, if, if, we can all make postulations and they may eventually turn out to be true, but personally I am still waiting on the hover cars and tinfoil skirts we were promised 30 or 40 years ago. seemed like a great and futuristic idea at the time, but it still hasnt happened has it?

So is it Apple TV 2 or 3 you are talking about, it seems that once again your real agenda is to bring up this tired old Apple televison set WISH.

Set up a yahoo group and be done with it ffs.

The DVD is a 10 year old media format, how old was the 3.5 inch floppy disc when Apple dropped it from their line 10 years ago?

Why would Apple want to include a tech that is or will be soon on its way out (seeing as you want to play the speculation game as to what the future will hold) BD I can see, but for the fact that it goes against Apples long term plan. Apple is not the great saviour of us all, inventing stuff from a magic wishing tree. they are a very specific hard and software company that make great products with a defined product market, if they wernt why have they resisted the "need" (as you would see it) to include a radio in the iPod? OTHER PMPs include a radio but Apple don't would you care to think for a moment WHY?

If you do come up with the reason, you MAY also come up with the reason why Apple WON'T be including a DVD player in the Apple TV.

Have you actually ripped any DVDs in handbrake? because it sure doesnt sound like you have.

If you think the Apple TV is such a great device, have you actually bought one? used it? lived with it?

Don't try and bring your 'logic' into a fanciful discussion such as this.

If you want them at full quality, 'Handbrake' is certainly not the right choice. Unlike music, video quality is important to everyone. Now if we are talking about a device that is meant for the mass consumer, then why even bring Handbrake up.

The mere fact that you say that tells me you haven't read this thread enough.

The big question is that of quality of video. TV and movie downloads barely work in Standard Definition if you have good broadband. That is why it makes sense to buy a physical BR-DVD or HD-DVD disc for the near future. A physical disc offers a superior product. Not as convenient as downloads, but markedly superior.

Also to rip all my DVDs would fill up a good size RAID system and those systems aren't cheap. To rip HD content would take even more room. So I do not see online quality video distribution and home digital storage working well for the forseeable future.

Now for low res online video, yes it is here now and works well. There are many types of video that I really do not need great quality. For most news, sports, and funny clips, HD is not really needed. It would be nice, but not essential - at least in my opinion. But I feel movies are a different animal. I want quality with movies.

Online music distribution works well because the files are small enough that people can browse, sample, and download. But nobody is doing that successfully with HD video content. Thus Blue Ray/HD-DVD is the best way to go for the foreseeable future. Apple should not ignore these players and they need to get one into their ATV.

I am still waiting for that Apple Televisions that Ireland predict months back. Where are they?

AppleTV won't have optical drive. Steve and Apple in few statements said that the future is download content. So I am pretty sure they have no reason to add it to AppleTV.

    So, let's move on.

    Visionary,

I agree with everything you said. The thing is AppleTv is geared towards a new model that Apple see as the future of TV, Download content. Yes, is years down the road to get that HDTV content at fast speeds etc. But eventually will happen.

Apple will add Blu-ray support on their Macs. But I doubt it on AppleTV.
