You don't think so? Gears of War was running at an insane resolution at 60fps with everything on with an 8800. I wouldn't rule it out, the spec will probably be similar to the new Macbook pros.

Are you referring to the 360, or a PC demonstration? If you're referring to the 360, dedicated gaming hardware commonly outperforms PC rigs with equivalent hardware. If it was on a PC, I imagine they were running an 8800GTX, and there's a snowball's chance in hell of getting one of those in an iMac.

I was thinking the iMac would have a GeForce 8800M GT. (maybe GTX) The card does not exist yet but there is a GeForce 8700M GT. Apple will hopefully push for it.

Possibly, but the performance there will still not be on the same level as an 8800GTX desktop machine.

No, but the new iMac should definitely being able to run it. I don't care about it not having crazy effects, but if it runs it at a steady framerate without looking much worse than the 360 version then I wouldn't be surprised. It should run TF2 at full spec though so I will be happy with that alone

by the way, I'm really looking forward to this new iMac and would love to be able to do some gaming on it as well, but I'm just trying to temper expectations.

I know, I just wanted to get some opinions on what the spec would be like. Gaming is a bonus as the current iMac is already good enough for me. I'm just waiting for the new model as it would be silly to buy one and then have them introduce one which would last me 2 years longer. I'm fed up of blue screens and my PC overheating and Windows in general. Release the imacs already
Edit: I also forgot to say that Epic did say they were releasing Gears of War and UT3 for mac. Therefore I imagine that the new iMac should be pretty capable of running these games
August: New iMac and matching keyboard (as per popular belief)
Basically a desktop-version of the current 17" MBP
Will be presented during a last minute special event
September: New Mac Pro (dual quad-cores across the line and newer GPUs, still same motherboards as now) (quiet update)
New iPod, 60 and 100GB, a bit slimmer design, updated GUI and maybe a bigger screen.
October: Leopard release
Updated iPod Shuffle (quiet update)
November: New iPod nano, upped to 2, 4, 8, 12GB (maybe 16) sizes (quiet update)
Incremental Updated Macbook (quiet update)
December: Nothing
January: New design for the Mac mini
13" inch ultra-flat portable, similar to MB but much slimmer. Almost no frame around the screen itself. Magnesium+Alu.
February: Incremental Macbook Pro update (quiet update)
March: Update to Mac Pro line with intels next Xeon CPUs
I'm thinking your way off. Just for starters, the Mac Pro was just incrementally updated and Apple hopefully will give it full service update for MWSF. but probably no sooner. People that just purchased one would scream bloody murder if it were any sooner.

The Mac Pro didn't get an incremental update, it got a additional top-of-the-line option.
An incremental update would be that 2.0 got dropped and all other models shifted down one step to take over its place.
2.0, 2.66 and 3.0 models have been practically the same for over 11 months now.
And the people buying them now should scream bloody murder every time they look at the apple website.

Are you suggesting that people would be surprised that the computer they just bought is going to be replaced by a better, faster, and/or cheaper model? Where have you been the past 20 years, that's always the case! Apple doesn't need to add a disclaimer on its website warning purchasers that the model they are buying today is about to be superceded, it's understood.
However, since Apple has already announced the next release of their operating system is imminent, many people are waiting to buy hardware with the new OS installed. Apple would sell more machines now if they would give a coupon for a free OS upgrade when it comes out.
...snip... Apple would sell more machines now if they would give a coupon for a free OS upgrade when it comes out.
Apple is going to sell the computer now or later to the people who are asking about a coupon for a free OS upgrade. If you buy the Mac now, then you pay $129 for the upgrade later. If you wait then the new OS comes with the computer.
You aren't suggesting that a person who wants to buy a Mac will buy a Windows machine because a free OS upgrade coupon is not offered for future OS X. Are you? I don't believe that will happen and neither does Apple.

I agree that Apple would sell more computers "now" if OSX coupons were offered. Not because mac people would buy windows machines instead, but because there are people like me who might decide to not buy now, but instead to wait for Oct. to save another $130. It's in Apple's best interest to sell as many as possible as soon as possible because the sooner they sell the sooner that hardware will be replaced later and the more total profit is made over time. On the other hand, Apple might be betting that people who do buy now will choose to pay again in Oct. and Apple will make equal or more money that way. I don't think that will work because today's new Mac hardware will drop more than $129 worth of value between now and then, so Apple would gain more to sell machines sooner, than to resell software later, imo. Of course, my opinion is biased by what I would like to see happen.

I hate your Mac Pro prediction. I do not want to wait until march for a new computer. I will not buy the quiet update. I hope they will just leave it until MWSF and give it the full treatment.
