    If this is a 2GB nano, I think no way it's going to be cost effective to hire someone else to mess with it.



    If it's a 4GB or 8GB, I might call my local Apple maintenance, explain the exact situation and ask what they could possibly do with it and for what kind of money. It wouldn't surprise me if with a little poking they were to say they do not open a Nano that refuses to boot. Then return to DIY.



    edit: if the choices are between getting an out of warranty replacement and buying a new one, definitely open this one up and mess with it. As long as you keep all the parts, how can you lose? Best case, you win the lottery and it starts working.
