So says Rowling herself:

This should help light a new (and completely ineffectual) fire under the crazies who are so scared that Harry Potter is turning their children to witchcraft and Satan.

I got to say, that kind of ruined the whole series when i read that, (I read it on CNN earlier today). Not that I'm against gay people, but i guess i would rather not have know that. this should get interesting with the fan fiction though...

What exactly does this news cause kids to "have to put up with"?

The premature termination of childhood for starters.

Yeah, why does sexuality need to be a dimension in the Harry Potter series?

Personally in the past few movies I've fancied a bit of three-way between Ron Weasley, Herm' and Harry... Too much sexual tension going on, it would be good to let it all out.

I would have to say in more seriousness, if you feel that homosexual/ bisexual issues "terminates" childhood, then I feel you do not have a grip on the challenges children face today, or have faced for many many years.

First, this detail doesn't even appear in the stories, it's merely part of the author's background and understanding of the character's history.

Second, even if a child did find out about the idea of a gay character, how would that "terminate childhood"? "Childhood" is somehow defined by ignorance of homosexuality, combined with perhaps a vague Disney-fied grasp of heterosexual attraction?

I don't recall ignorance as being my favorite part of childhood. Having parents who weren't great when it came to talking about sex, I do recall embarrassment at not knowing things other kids found out about younger than I did an unpleasant part of childhood.

Exactly! Especially the parents part. Though to be fair it was myself that sought to insulate myself from the real world with very high-falutin' notions of relationships and sexuality. In my early 20s as I "blossomed" it made me much happier and satisfied to learn more about the "truth".

(I'm not gay, for the record, bi-curious perhaps, but I like women of legal age...)

This whole JK Rowling thing will be big though, I wonder if it is a publicity stunt...

Witchcraft, Devil Worship, and now it will turn our kids GAY!!! OMFG!!! Orgies at boarding school, drugs, sex, trancemusik...

Even if this were true, it all was happening long before Harry Potter or Disney was ever conceived.

Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny, Hagrid/Maxime, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley... none of that constitutes "sexuality"?

Um, yeah. I do think most of childhood is characterized by an ignorance of sexuality. That's kind of the growing up part of life, isn't it?

Nope, childhood is viewing sexuality in a certain way. The growing up part is learning more about it (hopefully in good ways??) and experiencing it.
