I thought Harry Potter was gay. The franchise I mean.
The thing is, gay will never become a meaningless thing as long as people keep identifying it that way when it's being referred to. For example, the article says that a young member of the audience asked if he finds true love and she replied he's gay.
Now if someone young asked about a straight person that same question, she wouldn't have replied he's straight. It's as though gays have to be identified. Why couldn't she have said that he is attracted to some other guy?
BTW, have they started burning the books in Texas yet?
Um, yeah. I do think most of childhood is characterized by an ignorance of sexuality. That's kind of the growing up part of life, isn't it?
Even if ignorance is typical, is it such a great thing? Do you recall ignorance about sex as being a joyful thing you hated giving up? All of a sudden the (alleged) magic of childhood died upon learning some particular level of detail about sex?
Even the most shielded kids pick up pretty quickly that boys like girls and that as adults they seem to get pretty worked up about this stuff. Pursuit of marriage to idealized princes and princesses gets a lot of play in stories told to the youngest children. Does it really terribly complicate childhood to find out that sometimes boys like boys and girls like girls? Is that really that much harder to digest, and childhood-ending, than learning not everyone likes chocolate ice cream as much as you do, that other kids' parents take them to a different church (or temple, or circle, or none at all) than yours take you to, that the strategy for making it through Level 2 is different from the strategy that gets you through Level 1?

To each his own. I still don't think that young(pre adolescent) children need or want exposure to homosexuality. Just my opinion.

And what an incredibly lame opinion it is. Nothing to back it up, no depth to it, just "well, uh, that's how I feel 'cause that's, um, like, how I feel an' uh it's my opinion an' I gotta right to my opinion!"

Yeah, I had a flash of an idea last night that JKR planted the audience member to bring the gay thing into light. Could be a publicity stunt.

Gay ... ---> Paedophile ..... Unfortunately that is a strong connotation for most people. I will never be able to look at the way Dumbledore looks at Harry the same ever again...

I can understand that... but what about their friends that have "two mommys" or "two daddys"...? Just curious, how would you explain that to a 8 or 10 year old...? [Not being provocative here, I am wondering, in case OMFG I ever have kids...]

my uncle is gay and he has adopted a long with his partner ( who is an imbosile ) i believe 3 or 4 children off of one of my aunts who can not stay off of drugs and keep her legs closed. when kids grow up having the two fathers or mothers, they realise it is normal, it is later in life, around 10 probably, when they realise, why does "insert childs friends name" have a mommy and a daddy instead of two daddies, when you have some explaining to do.
Wouldn't it be messed up if a kid with gay parents became a homophobic later on in life. That'd be fucked. Hahahahaha.
Cheap publicity stunt. I wonder why she didn't declare this when the character was alive or at the start of the series. She could have atleast depicted him conjuring a bottle of vasoline from time to time...

Sorry you feel that way. Hell take your kids(if you have any) to the gay pride festival in San Fran. I really don't give a shit.

I would just state that they have two mommys or two two daddies. At age 8 or 10 it's not necessary to explain the details of homosexual relations. Kids of that age don't ask how two people of the same sex have sexual relations. At least mine haven't.
