Has this really ben removed?? I just went to no small amount of trouble to get a phone with iSync and Address Book integration.

I found out the KP issue is related to a buggy AirPort driver and the Azureus BT client.

And for some reason my computer wouldn't boot up at all 3 days after an erase and install. The AppleCare people were worthless because there wasn't anything they could do that I didn't already do before calling. So I had to use TimeMachine to restore my system-- just hours after buying an external hd and backing up for the first time.

The point of AppleCare is to then send the system back and let them test it and if necessary, replace defective parts with no charge to you.

Your backup being saved makes your restoration a helluva lot less painful than previous version of modern operating systems.

The hydraulic suspension also makes it easy to service your Citroen when it breaks down. I'd still rather have a car that didn't break down so much!

    Well, yes.

My point wasn't that AppleCare is worthless (rather, it's must-have on a laptop); just that in this instance, the Apple service and support people couldn't do anything to avert having to restore the system from a backup. Maybe that *was* my only option, but that's the second time in a week they couldn't help. The first time, I accidentally set the permissions on my hard drive to "no access" for "everyone." So on startup the computer would hang on a blue screen. The second time, several days later, after an erase and install, the computer would hang at the Apple logo on start-up. In both instances, reinstalling Leopard was basically the only solution they could come up with.

I agree with Matt-s that this OS is somewhere in the middle: at the moment.

I think Apple will address many of the issues in the future, squash bugs in 10.5.1 and perhaps address some of the GUI anomalies and missing features incrementally as each new update appears after that. I think they can and are able to this if they really want to and listen to the comments and feedback of the user base out there.

I wouldn't say that this is the worst OS in years it has potential to be better than Tiger, and Tiger was pretty good.

On the other hand....I can understand, how when features and functionality, crucial to somebody's workflow get broken, that this can leave a bad taste.

What I miss (I don't think it has been mentioned here already) is the search view in the Finder for searches and smart folders. It displayed files by category and was the most attractive aspect of Spotlight when it was introduced. I would rank this above the speed of Spotlight. Why did Apple get rid of this?

The other thing is a certain shared printer. We have a LaserJet 4L attached to a DMD G4 PowerMac using a parallel to USB cable and GIMP driver. It is used over the network on a Mac Pro. With both machines in Tiger it worked fine and quick. With the Mac Pro on Tiger (Power Mac Tiger still) there are problems. One has to keep adding the Laserjet 4L on the Mac Pro, it keeps forgetting. Printing from the Mac Pro to the Laserjet takes ages to connect. I does print eventually.

No, you're claiming something false. Having been there, done that, I say it ain't true.

It took literally one line of shell to sort out the bulk of the Apache conversion, and this should have been handled by the installer.

In your case. Have you tried to do the same thing in Linux? I think not.

Should Apple have added the one line? Perhaps, but your rant was silly and you never should have gone 10.5.0 and you should have done a clean install.

From Macintouch today: "Justin Hawkwood's Old Folder 1.0.0 adds a folder icon to the Leopard Dock that features Tiger-style hierarchical menu access to a selected folder (such as the Documents folder). Old Folder is free (donations welcome) for Mac OS X 10.5."

All I can say about this is: YES! Thank you!

Now if some enterprising software author would bring back Bluetooth functionality to Address Book, Leper would be close to Tiger. Another de-feature!

I hear you about Spotlight de-featuring.

I agree with you regarding printer and scanner driver and software support. Very spotty and poorly executed. Unprofessional. Printing and scanning - contrary to what Apple Product Managers might think - is a key functionality that must be preserved. They need to work closely with these peripheral vendors and make certain that equipment is operational & that drivers are certified before they make a major OS release like this. We still can't scan at all and few of our printers work reliably. Those that do work now print with only barebones features; none of the advanced selections are available. Another fabulous de-featuring of 10.5.

Lastly, if we could just get Apple to get rid of the curvy Stacks penis thing, we'd be on our way!

...someone's been surfing way too much porn. LOL

Apple made this so that you can change it to display in a grid view if you prefer

Are you taking a stab at it by calling it Leper or do you not know what a Leper is? Just curious because I've seen you refer to it as that a couple of times.

Yes, I know what a leper is, thank you. I was deploying a simple homograph; Leopard as Tiger after parts of it just fell off... you know, the old "face off in the corner" joke... I thought it was mildly amusing considering how de-featured 10.5 turned out to be...

Wish I had time for that (NOT)!!!!!

RE: grid view ... thanks, I believe you're referring to where we get force-fed icon view in some weird pinkish brownish sort of window, right? Man, that's one ugly sucker. Really hard to navigate folders with hundreds of folders within it via this monstrosity - exactly where folks need the most help navigating, it becomes the most worthless. Not only does this methodology look awful but brings little value.

As far as I'm concerned, the force-fed icon view pinkish window and the curvy penis thing jutting out of the Dock could die a death infinitely faster than the puck mouse and it would not be soon enough.
