powermac at special event: yes...

just talked to an apple marketing emp. i was mentioning that it may be a bit unfortunate to sell the new imac for 1800 bucks whereas the tower costs almost as much without a monitor or superdrive.

she smiled, shook her head and replied: "wait". then i asked "tokyo or special event"? -"special event".

so may the force be with her.

I sincerely hope you're right. I'm very diappointed in Apple (Steve) for not releasing a new PowerPC. It better be a G5 now ... they have more time to prepare ... no choice, but to bite the bullet. Did she give any indication as to when the "special event" would occur? Or does anybody have any ideas when?

If it was a special event, I think it would be between SF and Tokyo. Later than Tokyo, well you might aswell just pre-announce it, close to Tokyo, might as well just wait. Special event=February, might aswell go with Seybold. I think Its coming tomorrow in "The power of X keynte"

    nope

i know her for quite a while and although she doesn't get the details in advance, she knows when to order certain things for example...and she wouldn't bitchin' with me (cause i often know more than she does).

"special event"... in March, as soon as all models of the iMac are shipping. Shipping for G5, 3 days.

    G5 starting at 2 Ghz.

Apple.com 'Why 1 Ghz when you could have two' after "special event"

Well keep in mind that Nvidia is supposed to release the GeForce 4 in early February, they are very discreet about this upcoming chip...

I'll bet that they are waiting the release of the ney PowerMac line.... It will use a 8X AGP slot, so expect to see major changes in the Motherboard of the new Proline...

Do not forget that the use of the Nvidia card in the new Imac means huge profits margin for Nvidia, enough to give the exclusivity of the new graphic card to Apple, like they did last year with the Geforce 3......

Interesting point ... Nvidia, 8X AGP, February release date ...hmmm. I agree, Apple and Nvidia could very well be coordinating here. It also could coincide with a scheduled Apple Quicktime event on Feb. 11-14 at Beverly Hills, CA (if I read their "Hot News - Upcoming Events" correctly, see : <a href="http://www.apple.com/hotnews"; target="_blank">www.apple.com/hotnews). The March one doesn't seem like it would be appropriate. MacWorld Tokyo is when, April??, and MWNY is July, right?

    Interesting, about the Nvidia connection.

I think it's practically a given that G5s will soon be here, now that the iMac has a G4.

Way to go, Apple for giving the iMac a G4!

This is in many ways the most important news out of the expo. Now that the iMac has a G4, more software developers will write for Altivec, and the MHz gap will become less important.

Still, the iMac is quite short on MHz. It's plenty fast for ME, but I know about the G4 and what a bitchin' chip it is. I'm concerned that many consumers will be turned off by the G4's MHz rating. Too bad, because these are some fast iMacs...whew!

Yeah, but didn't Steve pre-announce the last big chip over a month in advance as a "first on the Mac" kind of thing? Why not this time if release date is in Feb.? I guess it might slow down sales of PowerMacs for a month, but at least it might prevent people from jumping ship for a month.

Apollo isn't ready. But that iMac already has a new G4. We know, from motos own PR, that G5 chips are ready and that Apollo is almost there. I think this iMac will get quite a bit faster by mid year. The enclosure is meant for an Apollo that will clock a lot higher than the G4 that's in there already. Supposedly memory system enhancements will be possible with Apollo aswell. I think, that just like the early days of the first iMac, this machine well get many updates quite early in it's life.

Did you not wonder why the G4 and Apple display offer runs until 31 January 2002?

I think it tells something of the anticipated announcement of new Power Macs......

Watch out for tomorrows keynote. What better way to show the Power of X than with a new PowerMac.

You know, much like the 233 Bondi iMac, the lack of a PowerMac upgrade will help the sales of the new iMac.

The new iMac looks way more competitive right now than it would if the PM line had G5s or 1GHz+ G4s. Any average computer buyer considering a Mac will likely buy an iMac now, rather than waiting.

Unfortunately the average computer buyer would not be considering the PowerMac anyway b/c of price w/o a display.

I can only hope that the lack of upgrade has more to do with waiting a little longer to announce something cool....that sounds familiar...

well honestly i say the apple will not put the nvidia in the GeForce 4 in the powermac's but i think they'll put the GeForce in the top two powermacs and they dual view in the lower powermac with the bto option for the GeForce 4 for $500 just like the GeForce 3 and it will at first be exclusive to apple.
