This iMac is truly anither great value in the Apple line-up. A superdrive equiped G4 with an 800 Mhz processor and a 15 inch flat panel a year ago costed $4,500 (and it was a 733 a year ago).

    WHAT AN INCREDIBLE VALUE!

This kind of value excits me because if we can expect the Pro machines to be "Proer" than the new iMac's we are in for some kick ass fast Powermacs! The Powermac is the symbol of Apple and it cant be left as is for too long. Apple may alo be working on/finishing a new casw for the PM. It will be here within 6-8 weeks people. If anyone actually jumps ship because of this they should have jumped a looong time ago.

    Mac.

If the new iMac had Apollos I'd say the new PowerMac had a 99% change of being G5. Since its using the 7541 (same as the TiBook IIRC), the Apollo can go into the new PowerMac.

This is ingnoring however, that the TiBook might get the Apollo at MWTK.

So I give 67% chance of the next PM being G5.

Well, in another forum, several retail employees from various companies confirmed that they (the store) had been told not to expect any new PowerMacs till at least February. One of the rumor sites mentioned special events recently because not enough chips are ready. I would guess to expect a special event in February. If they're holding a special event just for PowerMacs, then you gotta bet it's not just another speed bump. Whatever it is, it's gonna be good.

I think they should have put a G4 in the damn 14-inch iBook...or at least tweaked up the graphics a little bit...but that's beside the point...and leads me into the G5

I think we should expect the G5 and a new tower case within the next 5 to 6 weeks.

Whatever happens to the PM, it will happen during this month (Jan) or in March or April with the release of OS X 10.2

Didn't some rumor site claim that the PMs would be updated at a special event at the end of the month?

[quote] Apollo isn't ready. But that iMac already has a new G4. We know, from motos own PR, that G5 chips are ready and that Apollo is almost there. I think this iMac will get quite a bit faster by mid year. The enclosure is meant for an Apollo that will clock a lot higher than the G4 that's in there already. Supposedly memory system enhancements will be possible with Apollo aswell. I think, that just like the early days of the first iMac, this machine well get many updates quite early in it's life.

    Exactly.

Apollo is intended for Titaniums, iMacs.

    G5 is for Powermacs.

I see the new iMac getting lots of updates and enhancements. By next year, I predict that:

    1. 133 MHz bus.

    2. Apollo, clocked to 1 GHz or more.

    3. Possibly a new graphics chipset in at least one iMac model. Although history suggests that all iMacs will get the same GPU, I suspect that Apple may outfit at least one model with a GF3 chipset, as a gamer's edition.

    4. I expect a second iMac, with a 17" LCD display, by next year. This is so easy to add on, that it would be stupid of Apple not to offer it. Unlike the original iMac, there is no need to redesign this imac for a larger display. I believe this is a great design strength, because as LCD prices drop, Apple can put whatever they feel like on the this iMac with virtually zero development cost. Very cool.

This iMac is going to go places. What a great computer! I want one already, but history proves, never buy the first iMac model, because the first revision of this new iMac will probably rock. I bet with the first revision, it gets a 133 MHz bus, Apollo G4, maybe a new GPU, and one 17" LCD model.

Folks, the lead time on current PowerMac G4's at the Apple Online Store is 10 days. We'll be getting new PowerMacs, and we'll be getting them relatively soon.

Well, we hope that is the case. We don't really know what Apple will do. No one does. We know from Motorola that the Apollo is due in "the spring" and we know jack about the G5. It could be released next year.

In fact, I would say the next PowerMacs will almost certainly still use G4s. Why? The entry-level iMac isn't shipping until March and yet it doesn't have an Apollo G4. That indicates that the Apollo G4s will not be available until after March. The G5s are even further down the line from what I understand. Oh crap.

First off, no one is the true intension for the Apollo is for the iMac and TiBook exclusively. The Apollos could have very well never been intended to see the light of day inside a tower for all we know. The MWNY might rev up the iMac with the new Apollos for all we know.

We don't know what we are going to get. I personally take more fiath in the G5s because nothing came out tower wise disrupting the 6 month rev cycle. The iMac may have helped throw that off, but it makes more sence to say that Apple was giving Moto more time to fab more G5 chips to release. They may have not been ready to go.

I still hold out hope for G5s.

Apple.com 'Why 1 Ghz when you could have two' after "special event"

just to add a bit of enthusiasm.. this would definitely be the way to "close" the intel lead!.. and it sounds so Steve Jobs, too!..

"Everyone's been asking.. when's Apple gonna get to 1GHz".. everyone expects him to announce a new PM at 1GHz or maybe a bit higher.. "well, we decided to skip 1GHz, and go straight to 2!"

if they're gonna sell an iMac G4 800MHz at $1800, they've GOTTA have something up they're sleeve for the PMs!

with that said.. go buy yourself a new iMac while you wait.. (help me buy mine, by getting Apple's stock WAY up!

... and because of the new iMacs, the upcoming PowerMacs must all have SuperDrives (including the low-end). I like that

One thing that I am curious about... Where is this G5 thing coming from?? It seems that aside from a couple of anonymous posts on MOSR there is no evidence that this chip exists in anything even resembling useable fashion. Motorola themselves outlined their strategy, and even it shows "Apollo" G4's ramping up through the first half of this year. And so, in honesty is this talk just sort of "well, if all else fails then a complete refusal to look facts in the face will suffice" type thing?? I am truly curious; perhaps I missed some really convincing G5 evidence??

All the next PowerMacs will have Super drives... even the low end one. if they could put one in an iMac at $1800 with LCD, then they could certainly put one in a PowerMac tower without display.

You hit the nail on the head. The only information we have about the G5 is what was sent to MOSR/The Register by the same anonymous source. My guess is we will see the same current G4s speeds we have now but in dual configurations across the line. Apollo will follow for the TiBook in the spring and iMac in the summer and then a G5 for the PowerMacs in the fall.

I don't know. I think that it's a definate possibility but perhpas not. They may just put a combo drive in (DVD/CDRW). They may do this simply as incentive to get a mid range model. I'd love for it to have one since I'd be getting a low end but I'm not banking on it.

Your lack of LCD argument does hold some weight but then you also have to consider that the new PM's CPU will cost more (wheiter it's G4 or G5) & that it's bus/Ram will assumingly be much faster (DDR) which will increase costs. Then of course you also have the upgradablity of the PM which they'd include in the cost.

You see the G4 in the iMac was a goodstep of Apple, because it has no multi-potential. Quad-processor can't be done with G4 because it has a few problems with such things. That's why G5 is coming soon it has the potential for Quads, with Hypertransport and the new nVidia card,8X AGP.

G5 to the top with gForce4
