People do not want another device the size of a subnotebook or notebook; they want a pocket size computer yet one that is as large as possible to fit in say a jacket pocket. Not a device too small like a palm size PDA but more like a modern version of the great Psion Revo or 5mx, or HP Jornada type devices in the 90's. UMPC provide full windows in a mobile device but full windows programs need a good input, mainly touch type keyboard. Pen/slate concepts regardless of which OS never have sold well.
A device that is as thin as possible but could be as long as 7.5" and up to about 4" in depth would be ideal. The old Psion was 6.9" x 3.6" and most users could type close to desktop speeds with their unique expanding keyboard. I could type about 80% of desktop which was about 55-60 wpm.
There is no need to tell us what people want. We are people, and we already know what we want. WTF are you thinking? Just because you think something would be cool for yo to have does not mean that serious professionals need another gadget. We need practical devices that we can do serious work on.
I think the mobile sales dude is on to something. People do not want a notebook (someone posted a link suggesting sales were down). They want their cell-phone to be a portable computer, but that won't happen quite yet, so they want the next best thing: an ultra-portable mini computer that can do work but without sinking the boat.
If they come out with a DVD-case sized device, I think many business people would slurp it up like a beer at a football game.
I am a serious professional and I am looking for something that size, not another laptop or 13 inch ton of lead to lug around because I have that and I cannot lug it where I want to; my MacBook and MBP simply are too big to be useful most of my day, so I had to augment my arsenal with a Palm PDA and an iPod so I can type, manage my work, edit my pictures and make presentations. Two devices that could be one.
I feel it's a bit futile to talk about people want. In the end, we all have slightly different needs and want, and no 2 persons' wants are going to be exactly a like.
When you get past it, Apple is still a company, and is looking to make money. If they are to release a product like this, in any shape or form, they're going to make the product that the majority of people will accept, and therefore will get them the most profit.
Who knows, they might release a multitude of products, each varying on the scale between mobile and MacBook. In the end it's simply up to Apple and Steve Jobs to decide what to do, and ou know what its like trying to figure out what's going on behind their iron curtain.
