Apple cares more about money than they do about Canadian consumers.
They'd rather sell the product elsewhere than have to deal with the equally greedy Rogers or a potential trademark lawsuit. Think about it. The iPhone has been on the market for 8 months & 15 days. If they really wanted to release it, they could've figured out a way by now. They probably just did a cost-benefit analysis and came to the conclusion that Canada wasn't worth it. It's the only way to wrap your head around them releasing the product in a country of 6 million (Ireland) before releasing it to a country of 33 million just north of the border.
That is the most contrived and downright silly post I've seen here in awhile.
It's obvious to anyone with a brain that Rogers and not Apple is the problem in Canada.
Before you post such drivel, do your own cost-benefit analysis and see if it's worth having exorbitant cellular rates drive customers' bills through the roof and damage the Apple brand.
The upcoming spectrum auction will add another GSM network to the country, but it's going to take a couple years for it to get off the ground. In addition, there are rumours that Telus is looking to switch to GSM in the next few years as well.
The iPhone won't do very well in Ireland. They have attached what we call a 'Paddy Tax', this is a highly complex taxation system where they calculate a reasonable price & then double or triple it. This price has no relation to what is charged in other countries & it is expected that the dumb Paddies will buy it anyway.
Well, people are getting sick of it, hence the 'no' queues on launch day, anyone who wants one will be able to get it abroad...
Apple have no great following here anyway, as there are very few good retailers who sell their products. The overpricedPhone won't do their reputation any good.
The main reason the iPhone went on sale in Ireland at all is that the UK has massive stocks of it, and if Apple launch the iPhone 2, they'll be stuck with them. "hey, let's dump our stock in Ireland - they'll buy anything".

Actually, it's only between 100 and 125 USD more if taken from average prices you can currently buy it in Asia for.
That's not the way to figure it. Those are all hacked gray market devices that aren't using the contract that Apple's trying to have sold with it. The generally accepted word is that the monthly contract has about $5-$10 a month going back to Apple. The amount isn't known precisely, but Apple certainly does get some of their money that way.
