Apparently this update can be evil!? Success, anyone? Anyone done the 10.1.4 and Security Updates on a new iBook?

i have iBook 14inch, 384mb ram, with everything up to date as we speak. No probs.

MS Office works fine, Explorer DOES seem a bit more responsive...

    Just Speed Download 'unexpectedly quits'.

    Besides that, chaos as always

ZO, when you stick a CD or DVD in, does your iBook automagically open iTunes or Apple DVD player? This happened to me in 10.1.3, and still in 10.1.4: iTunes or Apple DVD Player (both the latest) will "unexpectedly quit" at boot time if I have a DVD or CD in. Embarassing, and stupid. My configuration is plain vanilla, not even extra RAM. I do have the latest TinkerTool, and Windowshade X 1.5.2 and Fruitmenu 1.5.2.

Also, Sherlock is fast now, or is it? I takes 10 seconds to launch. While it is launching it won't "listen" to my keyboard, like it would in OS 9. You know how OS 9, you could type while Sherlock was launching, and hit Return, and in a few seconds, the found items would pop up. Sherlock X sucks. It doesn't do this, and that is on top of taking literally 10 seconds to launch.

Last, has anyone seen this!?

Apparently MacOS X 10.1.4 is very BAD? How is everyone's 10.1.4?

On my G4 533 the 10,1,4 version work fine, Sherlock launch in three seconds, and the research are incredibely fast, i try to search the name explorer and the answer was given in one second.

The scrolling is better also. This has been confirmed by other members here.

This is looking good, 10.1.4 is faster, I hope 10.2 will be equal to MacOS 9 and i might stay with my iBook.

Yes, powerdoc, Fobie and ZO know what I mean. OS X + iBooks = unresponsive, too slow.

I assume Apple simply crippled the bus in my iBook 500, so as not to compete? Thus, it can handle an overclocking of the bus/CPU to 100/600?

10.2 will be incredibly fast, I'm sure, because 10.1.4 doesn't cut the mustard. I've never even seen anything below 10.1.3!

Internet performance is still too slow. OS9 was much faster in screen redraw, especially when using the back button. pages launched in a second in OS9, in OSX it seems as if you were never at that page before and it has to draw it for the first time.............................................. ...

heheh AirSluf, then we must pity the Beige G3 owners! <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> Good thing I have colored plastic Macs. Though I wonder, I have a Rage 128 / Rage 128 Mobility. These are some of the most common cards that have been in Macs recently. Why are Apple and ATi so dang slow at supporting a chipset that's been shipping in Macs for years, and still is in the iBook? As long as 10.2 graphics and GUI responsiveness are as good as OS 9, OS X will be a reality for me, and others.

AirSluf, I have yet to hear a simple reason why OS X is slow. Are you saying the video board drivers are missing in OS X? That doesn't sound right! In fact, when I search for "rage" I find Kernel Extensions. So, are you saying these aren't up to par with the OS 9 versions? Do you know why not specifically? Thanks for the info, anyhow!

You should be glad you never used 10.0.x. Now that was SLOW.

    heya, sorry to reply late.

Yes, when I insert a DVD or CD the DVD or iTunes opens automatically. You can disable this I think... in quicktime prefs or general prefs somewhere? Boh. Never looked into it really.

I just booted up with with an audio cd inside during boot and iTunes did NOT launch. It just says 'audio cd'.

To the contrarty of you, I have Windowshade, TinkerTool, etc all installed. 384MB ram. I JUST, a few hours ago, got a total lock up while deathmatching some Quake 3 on my local lan against a PC laptop of a friend. I had an uptime since 10.1.4 was out basically. Bummer. Oh well.

Besides that, Speed Download 1.8 just will not load. Always get an 'unexpectedly quit' dialog box. I just threw away everything including preferences I could find and anything else with Sherlock.

Oh yeah, about sherlock, it takes a while to start up, true.

Funny thing is while I was talking to this Apple engineer a few days ago I was complaining how much OS X sucked on iBooks. He had a sheepish expression as if it hadnt been the first time he had heard that complaint. It was a bit my way to try and get him to talk about 10.2 and potential improvements but he claims he knows as much as the rumor sites do. How sad. Anyway, what I want to get to is that while he was talking he mentioned that he never really notices the speed because being an engineer he normally gets pretty top end equiptment.

Seeing that its probably standard with all Apple engineers, I would propose that those damn lazy people ALL GET iBook 500s so they WILL NOTICE THAT they have to optimize the OS for their OWN needs.. and also understand how we feel. No shit they dont care about speed if they all have 667TiBooks and G4 Dualies!!!!

When I get hired at Apple I'll make sure they all get damn rev.a iMacs to their work on!!!! Bloody peasants!!!!

hmmm... just got another total lock. The mouse was moving, but EVERYTHING else was dead.

I had KDX, iTunes, MS Word, Navigator (Chimera), Explorer, and MSN Messenger open.

I was in the middle of typing some very deep thoughts (really... Im very 'upset' right now and the best way to think rationally again is to write everything I feel), and all of a sudden, blam, total freeze.

Since I rebooted I tried connecting to my friends KDX server again and its offline. He said it would be unattended. Im having a sneaky suspicion that either my crash crashed his server, or something very Canadian happened to his server that, somehow, influenced my client and the brought down the rest of the OS... ouch.

Whats that telnet trick again to kill processes and sort of 'restart' the os?
