secret "product transition" ?
"There is a secret "product transition" that will affect Apple's product margins, but which CFO Peter Oppenheimer can't talk about today. Whether this applies to the Mac, iPod, or another category is unclear."
Is it just wishful thinking to hope that the macbook pros are a big part of this transition?
Does the timing of MobileMe and the impending macbook pro refresh suggest something a little more revolutionary then just your typical macbook/macbook pro refresh? An industry shaking improvement to mobile computing?
Any thoughts on what else might be heading for a product transition? (its got to be something big enough to effect "Apple's product margins)

However, i'm guessing you're a little closer to the mark on the ipod "transition" as opposed to an entirely new product line.
My guess is a transition to all touch iPods, except for the nano and shuffle. The other possibility is the MacFolio 5.5"x8.5" multi-touch organizer/iPod/WiFi browser & easy-bake oven.
I want MacFolio please.
It most likely means they're going to cut the sale price of the laptops, to be in line with competitor pricing. They said they didn't want to create an umbrella so its gotta be a price cut and most likely an updated product of their current lines
Thus lending further credence to the iPod touch full line theory.

Product transition dude. Is cutting prices a product transition? And its not an update either. Wanna bet?
This time it is obviously for the notebooks:
- possibly new enclosure(s)
- speedbump to Montevina (possibly up to 2.80GHz standard at a "standard" price)
- possibly 13" LED LCDs for the MB
- possibly a higher rez 15" display (1680x1050) and 1900x1200 standard for 17" display
- move from DDR2-667 RAM to DDR3-XXXX RAM?
- standard storage increase?
All these could lower the margins if prices are about the same.
Given the graphics features of the GM45/47 chipset, it is also possible that both the MB and MBP notebooks receive an IGP as well as dedicated graphics from nvidia/ati to offer the "graphics switching" capabilities. If this really works!
The only price cut that may be possible is a $999 entry-level MB (from $1099).
On the iPod front, it is possible that the iPod touch will get new prices/storage options, but I believe this will have more impact on the december quarter than on the september quarter.
As far as really new products are concerned: MWSF 2009.
Well, Apple did say that all of their displays would be LED back lit by the end of 2009. That isn't something that you would do overnight, and they've already started.
To drive significant sales at Apple these days, Apple must have a price point that is acceptable to consumers. Products fitting these "impulse sales" price points are iPhones and iPods, not their larger computer offerings. Key drivers for increased iPhone and iPod sales are iTunes and now the App Store. It only makes sense that they push products that will increase the availability of incremental income tschotschkes (I'd call them digital candy) on iTunes/App Store... again pointing toward an iPod touch full line or a so-called MacFolio.

Yes, this all makes me think it's about a very solid, cheep, multipurpose server.

Why has nobody mentioned the o' so significant acquisition of PA Semi?
PA Semi? A Special Version of ARM Cortex A9 QuadCore instead of Intel X86?
Highly unlikely

Laughable. Apple is never going to use PA Semi's technology in its computers. It's for handheld devices like iPods and iPhones.

Never say never. PA Semi is supposed to working on support chips that go along with a computer. Who knows what it would be but Apple can do whatever they want.

I guess that depends on your definition of computer. Is the iPhone a computer? What about the tablet they'll be releasing?
Maybe they just bought PA Semi because they had nothing else to do with $300 million
