I'm not getting mad. I was pointing out the obvious, and you're getting defensive about it. And yeah, do stop replying, cause you're not contributing to the thread really. You're just rambling on about Apple making water bottles and teaming up with Walter cause you expected me to get pissed off about it. Apple making a TV is not left-field for them, really. Most sane observers would appreciate that. It's a technology box with a screen (market) which they could conceivably make a excellent contribution to. They make a box that connects to the TV, the sell TV shows and they sell and rent movies, they want the living room, they make computers, TV's are beginning to be connected to the net, iPTV is on the horizon, they are experts in easy-to-use, brilliant software and hardware, they already make large screens, they took computer out of their name because of the direction the company is going (Steve's words), I could go on. There's lots of reasons. So yeah, this bottled water nonsense is not contributing at all.
As I said before "we'll see what happens". I think am right, but so do you. We'll agree to disagree.
What is it exactly that Apple can bring to the TV table? You've repetitively said that the current TV UI is terrible and needs Apples improvement. What is wrong with it and how can Apple improve on On/Off, Channel Up/Down, Volume Up/Down and input select?
An earlier post stated that the Comcast UI was terrible. Can this be expanded on. I do not have Comcast, it is my local provider and I would like to know what is wrong with it. Don't include DVR issues. First is that I don't use it and second is that it will alway remain crappy as long as the MPAA is a legal organization.

What are you asking me?
My my point here is that Apple makes great hardware and great software and they want the living room. An Apple television fits in with Apple's general strategy very nicely, and they could tie in seamlessly with an iTunes TV subscription service, without the need for any box hanging off the TV. Now what actually about that is not a point? Apple loves to control the experience, and generally speaking people like that because they usually provide a great experience. Apple loves AIO, and a TV in this regard would be "exactly" that. And also, TV's aren't cheap, which means "profit". It just makes sense for them. I am continually astounded when people here think of crazy when I say this. Though, everybody's crazy until they are right, or they succeed. I believe Apple will make a TV, that's my point. People said the profits aren't big enough. I not only disagree with that, but Apple guided for that too. Slightly lower profit % than usual, makes sense. And, they could and will continue to sell their Apple TV box also.

But why does it have to be a complete television? Everything you stated can be accomplished by a set top box. Why does it have to be a television?
A set top box would be a much bigger sell than a television. With a set to box Apple will not have to ignore all those potential customers who have just recently purchased a new HDTV. An Apple television will not be the television of choice for those who want to use the Netflix box or any of the other devices coming from Apple's competitors. Or do you think that Apple will open up their television to all comers? A set top box can be used with all TVs, from any manufacture. And will work nicely beside any other box that will be coming.
To answer your question -- What is so wrong with your current television that only Apple can fix it?
--------------------
Edit: You are right in that televisions are expensive. This is why an Apple AIO television makes no sense. First, people will not throw away their brand new televisions just to get the Apple logo. Not even the MacMacs. Second, people do not replace their television on anything remotely like the rate they do with computers. Don't confuse the current television refresh cycle with anything like reality. These TVs will be around for another 10 to 15 years. This is nowhere close to the 3 to 5 year cycle that computers experience.

It illuminates the need to buy a television from someone else, thus removing the box from equation. Resulting in one device, not two. Thus simplification, and more control for Apple. And more profit. And they'd continue to sell the box because of all those who bought a TV recently, so they could still go with the Apple service.
You wouldn't need to set up the TV and the box, just the box - if you bought that sexy Apple tele.

Many, many things are wrong with the current TV setup. Need for a universal remote, or more than one remote. TV software sucks; "it's like baby software" to quote that guy. Even the remotes that come with your TV are too complex. The Apple TV has to be setup to your TV. By Apple making the TV is simplifies it more than it already is, makes things easier to use. Gives the TV's better software, and great looking hardware. Apple could sell the TV for less than someone could buy a decent TV an an Apple TV also. There really is a million reasons. And once Apple produces the TV that does it all, from their point of view, they control your living room.

So your saying that Netflix should sell a TV instead of their box? That NBC should sell a TV dedicated to Hulu? Any everybody else should sell TVs instead of their new internet enabled devices. No thanks, I would rather have on TV with many boxes hanging on than many TV each doing one thing. Eventually these boxes will converge, but it wont be soon. Apple could jump start this by opening up the AppleTV but they haven't done so yet.

No, exactly the opposite. They don't have Apple's expertise, taste, talent, vision, foresight, leadership or OS X to pull it off in such a great way that it would make the experience wonderful, the software great, or the hardware to-die-for. Unlike Apple.

While Apple may make a better end product we do need these people and their products. If nothing else as a buffer against iTunes. I wish for Apple to open up the AppleTV so that these other content providers can get on board and attempt to sell us their wares. The PC and Browser wars are over, the Internet Content wars are getting ready to start. We need to remain flexible so that we can test and choose the best internet content provider. Another argument against purchasing an Apple AIO television.

A TV is a display device. The UI is simple as stated above. On/Off, Vol, channel/input sources and that's it. The complications are all in the integration of the various components required in a home theater. Since Apple can't replace those components and the companies that own them won't allow integration there's no way Apple can make the experience seamless.
So what you're saying is Apple is stupid enough to attempt something that pretty much doomed to failure from the get go. AppleTV is apple's set top play and the iMac the lifestyle integration platform and you may see larger, medium res, displays on the iMac.

Eh...they might add speakers and a HDMI port for the ACDs. But these aren't really TVs as described by Ireland but dual use monitors.

Right on. That's not what I mean. Besides, a TV wouldn't need such high resolution.
