Well...we may just see a turnaround...upgrade prices may well surface very soon...

Did you forget Mac OS 10 is a brand new OS? Did you forget they had to re-write NeXTSTEP/OpenSTEP and make it more modern? Did you also forget it was way behind schedule and Apple had to release 10.0.0 ASAP so they will not make it look like another Rhapsody/Pink/etc etc?

It has been two year since Mac OS 10.0.0 came out, with all the other OS releases free of charge, are you forgetting the Mac OS engineers get paid money too?

I too will pay for the upgrade, but it does make me a bit mad. I just spent $1800 for my first Mac just over a month ago when I switched from a PC, and now I have to shell out another $130 for an update. (Albeit, a major one, but still) I think there should at least be a small "grandfather" period to allow recent purchasers at least a discount.

Does anyone know if you can upgrade to 10.2? By that I mean will all of your previous data still be on the system? Or will you need to re-enter it all and copy you backed-up data back into the new OS?

I think those of us that jumped on the OS X bandwagon when it first came out feel like we're being punished for not waiting until 10.2. Why should we have to pay the same amount as the OS 9.2 users? We've already invested in OS X. Current OS X users should get an upgrade price. As much as I like the features of OS X.2, I'm not going to fork out another $100+ on the same OS.

Also, it's in Apple's best interest to have as many OS X users as possible, all running the latest version of OS X.

Look at it this way, would it make a better impression on a Windows user to see a Mac running 10.1 or 10.2? And if apple makes a good impression on those windows users with the latest version of OS X, then it translates into more hardware sales.

So if Apple had made Jaguar either a free update, or given a reduced upgrade price, then MORE OS X users would be running Jaguar, and Apple's reputation would be that much better.

I think Apple is shooting themselves in the foot on this one, and I'm going to help the put the gun back in the holster... How will I do that? By making sure that as many mac users are running 10.2 as possible. My plan involves blank CD-R, a CD burner, a copy of Jaguar, and a couple of Titanium balls. If I contribute to even a single switcher, then Apple just made 10 times as much money as they would have selling a copy of Jaguar.

I don't get your plan, J-Dawg. Are you going to hand out free CD-Rs, then install jaguar, and use the

titanium balls as those chinese-hand-marble things (OMFG gross mental Picture!) while it installs?

    Spit it out, dude.

My sentiments exactly. OS X users should be offered an upgrade price, we shouldn't have to pay twice to get the working OS. Fsck the "new features" and just give us the OS with the speed & features promised in the first release. A real Finder that doesn't behave like a piece o sh!t and embarrasses me in front of my PC friends, Real networking, Real Speed etc. Hell, I'd even settle for the new Finder at an upgrade price, but paying full price twice to get a working OS is bullsh!t.

I bet you'd be complaining about me being a cheap bastard if I complain if they make me pay again after I've eaten half my burger at Burger king too, but that's life. You either take it up the @ss or stand up and complain.

[quote] Free 10.2 updates would have done this, by making sure that every Mac running OS X is running the best version possible, it improves Apple's image.

Then when 10.3 came around, you and a few others around here would be crying if you had to pay for that upgrade.

    When does it end?

My only qualm is that I bought a machine a little over a month ago and I have to pay full price.

Anyone who is screaming about having to pay for 10.2 after buying 10.0 16 months ago is nuts.

Unless you do a clean install, an OS upgrade doesn't do anything to your data.

OS is bar none the greatest OS that i've ever used. Given the new features, i think 130 is very reasonable... I mean just consider all the stuff you are getting with this. Just the windows network compatability in itself is worth atleast $130 dollars!

Here is a thought though. I was planning to upgrade many of the computers at our business to OS X. I also just recently started working on that by buying the full version of OS X about TWO WEEKS AGO! I'm also looking at multiple computer purchases, Microsoft updates, Adobe updates, etc. to get our whole office to X.

Now, I'm back to waiting. I'm a bit pissed about the update two weeks ago and we can run all the software needed for a newspaper on the stuff we have now. I also don't have to retrain ALL of our employees for a bit longer.

Unfortunatly, if it was a free update for those who purchase computers now, and a discount for those who recently purchased, I'd still look at buying the machines right now and doing a few employees at a time. We also wouldn't have waisted our money buying OS X a couple of weeks ago.

Smart move Apple! Nothing like making a business ready to spend money wait longer. Also a great way to build up the adoption rate and help your developers sell more copies.

    Oh well!
