I apologize. I get so caught up on MS bashing. Good luck dude.

    Where's the love, people?

I use an early 2008 MacBook Pro with Leopard, but it's also partitioned with Windows XP Pro because I like to play games.

XP Pro with SP 3 is very stable and I use AVG free to keep malware at bay.

Sure, OS X is clearly a much more advanced system, but Windows works okay -- why the extreme hatred?

    Peace from Paris

If you run ANY version of Windows without anti virus software you are playing with matches and gasoline and if you haven't had a virus yet I'm sure it's a matter of time.

I use AVG, CNet always rates it very high and it's Free and always has been.

I have never had a virus but AVG has stopped countless attacks on XP, Vista, Vista SP1, Vista SP2.

I cannot speak for Mac as I haven't used one in about 5 years.

    AVG + Malwarebytes.org + spybot immunity = decent protection for free ;P

When I saw the name, I burst out laughing. In Portuguese, "Morro" means "I die." (It also means "hill," but "morrer" is the verb "to die" and "morro" is the first person present indicative form meaning "I die."

    Nice work, Microsoft!!!!!!!!!!

Why not just use weekly patches bundles instead of competing in a market you helped create? This is why I like Apple handles it with there random security updates and there 10.#.## bundles which also includes enhancements, new features, as well security fixes.

I've rarely seen a more ignorant, misinformed and inane set of opinions than in this thread + this coming from someone regularly entertained by the antics of members from the psychologically orchestrated (via Apple PR) Mac/Jobs cult. You don't have any choice but to use the non-thinking persons/customizable + intuitively challenged/ 'My First? OS' (ie simplistic, impractical learning tool for infants) Mac OS with such beliefs ( Yes the MOON is made of CHEESE, Yes the WORLD is FLAT - what BIZARRE coincidence you share these kind of "unique" notions that religious cults promote - well as long as it makes you feel good thats all that matters, fcuk rationality + the scientific method, hey) AND if you are DUMB enough to succumb to the concept of 'Branding' for such consumer goods.

I won't. I've had too many machines crash and burn in the last six months to do anything but bash Windows. I'm not a home user switching it on and complaining. Try writing a major document at a deadline and have your machine completely freeze up because the AV software conflicted with a driver. Four hours to fix. Or try accessing wireless at a conference to find out Windows somehow lost the driver. This has been a regular pattern over the last twenty years using Microsoft "products".

I've switched to Mac, but if their software/hardware proves to be as crappy, I'll bash them too. I don't like parting with my hard earned money for crap that keeps getting recycled and excused away.

kudos. finally. this is what i have been saying they should do for a while. paying for their service is like paying protection. what a conflict of interest!

IMHO, this is the least they could do. good for them.

    This is hilarious.

The ONLY trojan/malware/virus I have ever had since running XP SP2 via VMWare on my MBP 17 was slipped into my download from the Microsoft Windows Live OneCare site!

So, do think I am going to subscribe to this new antivirus software that requires me to access their online site to run it?

    NOT!

And what makes you think we don't believe you are just the same. Otherwise, why are you here?

Trying to save us from the evils of solid hardware and software design?

I don't think they'll run into anti-trust issues. This is something Micro$oft should have built into Windows long ago. I don't think the anti-virus software companies out there have much to worry about. If it's anything like Live One Care, it'll be virtually useless and people will have to seek third party solutions anyway.

XP, Vista and 7 are now rock solid and are very secure. AV is not needed.

I just run Avast in XP (and now on my Vista PC). Man, not having any antivirus on Windows is like unprotected sex... You just never know...

I agree Norton and all that is overbloated rubbish. Just use Avast. No worries.

The only reason I tolerate, and even enjoy, Windows, is for modern PC gaming.

I stopped running anything mission-critical or life-critical on Windows for about 3 years now. It's the only way to stay sane. Mac for work and life. Windows, for everything else non-essential.

Left 4 Dead? Absolutely groundbreaking ...Now that's worth installing Windows for. ...Only thing is I blew a power supply on my PC, had to get a more powerful one. Installed aftermarket CPU cooler, they sold me a wrong one, had to get a proper Zalman one. Vista graphics had some issues I had to research regarding DVI on my Sony 17".

Other than that, now my PC is up and running fine and enjoyable!

Windows is not that bad... But sometimes quite a bit of luck is involved depending on how you use it.

    Peace from The Equator

Seriously, I enjoy PC games in Windows Vista, DirectX10, etc. I use my Mac for mostly everything else.

Oh and I use my PC for GPU Folding(Stanford).

    Nope.

Services can only go so far, a testament to how vulnerable windows is.

They can only scan regedit key and folder structure. That combination will not prevent rootkit infection. For that you need to add in rootappeal utility or something.

Then it gets worse. If the trojan attacks your userinit.exe (logon), or put dummy temp files into your system32 (10k+ 1k dummy files) or edit your user profile hk key.

    YOU ARE SCREWED.

The time it takes to fix some of those may be as much as 3hrs to a whole day.

Fix userinit means having a backup around, and or installing/uninstalled/reinstalling SP3.

Malware cleaning is anything but simple. Professional I can say it's always a case by case basis. Sometimes it's a cakewalk, other times it's tricky, other times, you can professionally say it would less to format the to fix for a few variants.

The worse case I have seen is where it made dummy files in user profile, win32, and windows.

Any scanning is impossible, and any attempt to delete it is about as effective as putting a hammer to your hdd.

Microsoft, like other companies, makes and sells an operating sytem that has security flaws. It is a conflict of interest for them to market software to protect that operating system. Here is why:

    1) If they know of a security vulnerability, they should be patching their OS, not updating antivirus filters.

    2) If they don't know of a security vulnerability and are therefore unable to patch their OS, how can they honestly market a product to protect against that vulnerability?

The above reasons are why we have third party security firms that have an financial interest in finding security vulnerabilities that the OS maker is for whatever reason unable to find and fix themselves.

Microsoft should be sued on one of the following grounds:

    - Selling an OS with security vulnerabilities they obviously know about because they are marketing fixes for them.

    OR

    - Marketing a completely useless product that claims to fix security vulnerabilities that Microsoft knows about and already patched in their OS.

    Disclaimer:

    - I own PCs and not Macs (yet)

    - I don't work for or have any financial or other interest in antivirus software other than wanting it to work properly (and being a little pissed I have to buy it in the firstplace).

    - Marketing (as shown by the IE lawsuits) includes giving a product away for "free".
