That's an interesting link, but when has Motorola actually delivered something on time?

They came close with the G4, but the shipping delays and drop on the G4/500, and not being able to get beyond the 500 MHz chip for well over a year destroyed whatever credibility they had.

    Conspiracy Theory:

Apple sent out all these rumors. Notice how almost all the sites are saying G3s in iMacs and the PowerMacs will barely reach 1Ghz but only with G4s.

Then SpyMac and other sites get G4 specs with bogus model numbers.

Perhaps Apple has been working with Mot to get the G5 ready and Jobs told them: "keep it quiet or we're going to ditch you guys, you're f'd up too much in the past, this is your last chance".

I'd say most of this board and almost all of the media outlets is not suspecting a G5 tomorrow. Wouldn't Jobs love to come out and say "and you thought this wasn't coming to the summer".

    Hope springs eternal

well this could be right. the G4 should get up to 1000 Mhz when the G5 will be introduced. i think that's the way it should be. makes sense. BUT: is geek.com right on their predictions?

nonetheless - I GET MY HOPES ON NEW G5 with NEW way to interact with a computer. if it really comes that way i'll eat my *whatever*....

The disbelief regarding the G5 is based on Motorola's past performance. I personally believe that something has changed between the time of the original G4 debacle and now.

I once learned, to my regret, that outsourcing things crucial to your core business can be very dangerous. The outside source doesn't have the same incentive to produce as someone whos' entire job depended on it would.

Desktop CPUs are a tiny portion of Motorola's market, even more so now than before. I truly think Apple was caught with their pants down when they realized exactly how little Motorola cared about pushing the envelope on the PPC series of processors. Steve & co. understood that, "megahertz myth" notwithstanding, they needed to regain control of their company's destiny.

I suspect they raided Moto's best and brightest engineers, acquired promising technologies (Raycer?) and pulled every contractual string possible to bring the development of the G5 in-house with the fabbing handled by a third party (AMD or IBM). Motorola's comments about the G4 having a lot of life in it, and not commenting on Apple products, could fit this scenario.

I'm aware this is a rehash of a story that has been going around, but it's been generally dismissed as unrealistic. In light of the "next generation" graphic and all the Star Trek refs on the Apple homepage, I'm starting to believe it's not only possible, but the ONLY explanantion.

But where's the lady with the hammer?

Was just scanning a bunch of the Mac news sites and on those that are still up I was reading about the massing at various locations worldwide for folks watching the latest keynote.

This year, for the first time ever, Apple has their stores showing the keynote via satellite - a place for the local Apple brethren to worship.

Apple tuned their pre-show campaign to the most zealous of their Apple fans, producing pre-show mystery and in-turn interest like never before.

The sites speak of unprecedented attendance, overflow rooms and standing room only. All this to watch one man speak.

And all it makes me think of is a little, one minute commercial from the SuperBowl in '83.

I am taking a day off of school because I have not missed once all year (ok maybe one time) and this is the future! This keynote will be more educational to me than one day of school could ever be. My parents are glad to let me take this very special day off. My computer graphics teacher is not. He thinks that this Apple hype is just a marketing ploy for Apple to get people like me "sucked in". This man should not be discouraging the keynote he should be showing it in class. Oh well, snow day or not I am watching the keynote at Penn State University where they have a sattelite downlink.

Macintosh, I wish my parents were like you. They think it's ridiculous for me to stay home or go to the Apple Store to watch it. So it looks like the only way I'll see it is if it's a snow day.
