I arrived at about 8:20 at my local AT&T store. Despite my desire to have an iPhone 3g on day 1, it was not my priority today due to more pressing matters. Soon after my arrival (still second-to-last in line, the store manager comes out and says that he's pretty sure that they don't have enough stock on hand for everybody and that they got shortchanged in the inventory allocation despite supposedly being the highest volume AT&T store in the northeast. Anyway when I got to be the 15-20th person in line, people started coming out without bags. At this point the store went into "direct fulfillment mode. We went in, paid, and an order was placed that would ship an iPhone with our name on it directly to the store where it will be held for us. As an added bonus, if we are able to find one, they will cancel the order and fully refund our money. I'm off to the Apple store which is a bit further away tomorrow morning to see if I can get my hands on one, having been reassured by the AT&T rep that I can bring in my reeipt and they will cancel the order.
