How do you rebuild the desktop in OSX? I heard it was different so I wanted to get some more info before I tried it on my system.

I don't think you need to rebuild the desktop in OSX, I never have. You can rebuild the Classic desktop in the Classic prefpane of System Preferences.

You can try <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=14154&db=mac"; target="_blank">Desktop Rebuilder</a>, but according to most people, you don't have to do this.

I tried it with mixed results-- I had lost some icons, and this brought it back.

I recall seeing this same question fairly often in the Mac newsgroups out on Usenet. Here is <a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;safe=off&amp;[email protected]&quot; target="_blank">one post</a> among many on this topic discovered with a Google Groups search.

AFAIK, there is no such thing as rebuilding the desktop in OS X. It's not related to the old OS 9 DesktopDB.

There are no desktop in OS X Finder is just another application.

However, there are some tools that "rebuild" your computer by prebinding, repairing privileges, defragmenting, etc.

To prebind, download software called "XOptimize"

To repair privileges, download software called "Apple Repair Privileges"

To defragment your hard drive, buy either Norton Utilites or Drive 10

Both of them can be found at <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com"; target="_blank">www.versiontracker.com</a>

If you really want to do it, do this:

    rm "~/Library/Preferences/*LS*"

...then log out and back in again. But you really shouldn't ever have to do this.

You DO have to make sure your cron tasks get run, though. Check out this link:
