Apple this week released new drivers for HP printers in its latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The file, labeled version 2.2., is a 383MB download available from Apple.

A number of HP printers, including Photosmart, OfficeJet, DeskJet and LaserJet models, are affected by the driver update. A complete list with numerous HP printers is listed on Apple's Web site. The update requires Mac OS X 10.6.1 or later.

Since the release of Snow Leopard, Apple has advertised new printer-related features in the operating system upgrade. Apple's Software Update will automatically provide you with third-party printer software and updates, "Nearby Printers" is a list of available printers that will appear right inside your printer dialog box, and you can simply connect a USB printer and the print queue will be automatically created.

What? No outrage! No praise or gratitude?

Are we to presume that all the bitching about HP is now resolved and yet no one has the balls to give thanks?

OK, this is going to sound really nit-picky, but I have to ask. The article just says that the update is available from Apple. According to the 3rd paragraph, printer updates are supposed to come via Software Update. And AI usually says when an update is available via Software Update like the recent iTunes update...

So is it safe to assume that this update came via Software Update? Because I have an HP Deskjet 6940 and when I ran Software Update, no update came through. So I guess they didn't update my printer?

The HP Deskjet 812C still doesn't work on Snow Leopard. For that matter, it didn't work on Leopard either. So Apple/Gutenprint -- WTF on these drivers ?

The list of supported drivers is there.

    Have you installed Gutenprint 5.2.4?

Tried Guteprint 5.2.4 and it doesn't work. I then ran the uninstall of 5.2.4 and then re-installed 5.2.3 from Apple's HP drivers update. My workaround has been to load Windows via VMware Fusion and print common file formats from there.

Want whining? My Deskjet 5652 (which I bought from Apple, actually) was supported under Leopard but isn't under Snow.

Actually, I don't care that much. I used the driver for a different model and it works fairly well. But I can whine if you want

What do the Log files say about configuring CUPS 1.4.1 and OS X?

I had a 50MB update for printer drivers from SU. I use an old HP 1200 and print wirelessly via an airport express to an otherwise non-networkable printer.
