Greatest Instrumental Prelude/Interlude/Ending to a Rock Song
After listening to Funeral For a Friend (been a while since I'd heard it), I got to thinking how great these classic tunes really are...but that they'd be much less were it not for the instrumentals.
My votes go to:
1. Funeral for a Friend (prelude to Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John)
2. Foreplay (prelude to Long Time - Boston)
3. Won't Get Fooled Again (prelude and ending - The Who)
4. Voice Box thingy on "Do you Feel Like I Do?" (Peter Frampton)
5. Guitar Interlude in "Holiday" (Scorpions)
Brain is locking... I know there are some rock bands that used to do massive instrumental intros to start their concerts back in the 80's (thinking Pink Floyd, among others) but I can't remember what they're called, if anything.
What do you guys think? Any others I'm missing? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

1. Organ intro to the Doors' 'Light My Fire'
2. College favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Free Bird' end of song jam.
3. The Eagles 'Hotel California'
4. The ending of Chicago's '25 or 6 to 4'
5. Organ intro of Procul Harums' 'Whiter Shade of Pale'
6. The intro to KC and the Sunshine Bands' 'Get Down Tonight'
Thats all I can come up with right now....................
I go into air guitar mode whenever I hear it.

Ina Gadda da vidda- Iron Butterfly- Drum solo in the middle.
- the very end of I Know, the last track on Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn...". I love the way it finishes off the whole album.

- The beginning of U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name"
- The opening synthesizer riff of Van Halen's "Jump"
- The opening piano riff of Van Halen's "Love Comes Walking In"
- The first minute or so instrumental of Depeche Mode's "Behind The Wheel"
- The beginning of U2's "Pride (In The Name of Love)"
2. Castles Made of Sand (beginning and ending guitar) - Jimi Hendrix
3. Lust for Life (killer intro) - Iggy Pop
4. Lobotomy (beginning and ending) - Ramones
5. Walk on the Wild Side (unforgettable intro) - Lou Reed
Anyway ... I will submit both the original and shortened [still around 10 minutes] versions of Edge of Darkness, Clapton, with a massive orchestra.
comfortably numb - last two minutes
on the turning away - last two minutes again
sorrow - first minute and a half
coming back to life - first minute and a half
just a few that came to mind.
<strong>This is a great thread, I have wanted to know who did Whiter Shade of Pale for like a year and no one I know had any idea ...

edge of darkness is awesome.
I also nominate Your Time is Gonna Come- Led Zeppelin. organ at beginning
Start Me Up Rolling Stones (well almost anything they do starts off well)
Almost anything by the Who starts off well.
Anyone seeing a trend there?
(or Midnight Blue - same band)
Saw this guy live and he blew my mind. Wonder what the hell happened to them though.... 2 CDs and gone...
Sir Psycho Sexy - Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
No question

<strong>the start to "Come on Eileen"</strong><hr></blockquote>
Have you heard the Save Ferris cover of that?
Better than the original!
Especially if you like ska...
I forgot to add the ending to Free Bird (good call), and also the intro to For Those About to Rock from AC/DC. [beavis]Yyyyes! Yyyyes! Rock, ROCK![/beavis]
And yes, Come on Eileen is awesome... gets ya really psyched up.
An automatically recognized from the start is also Flash from Queen and, yet again from Queen, One Vision. Hmm, Queen has so many songs that start really well.
