Does anyone know a discussion board of people who have recently bought an iPad and are reporting in on current ship times, like Macrumor's Macbook Pro one? I have an iPAd on order and would be interested in watching the relationship between order dates and ship dates (and will help make the wait for my own ship date a bit less nail-biting!)

My secretary has one, and it really is a terrific device. Everyone says to me that it's nothing more than a "giant iPod Touch," and that does nothing an iPod doesn't already do. My response is "hell yeah, it's a giant Touch!".
My 52in LCD TV is only a bigger 13in old TV, yet size does matter...
PS: Does anyone know of anyone that now wants to supplement a PC with a netbook? I don't. Everyone I know seems to want a tablet or some sort for satellite computing.
For me, the biggest problem with a satellite mobile computer has to be synchronization. To be honest, I haven't looked terribly hard, but I'm surprised I haven't heard about some kind of automatic data & file synchronization software for computers, seems like it should be a pretty big issue. Mobile Me offers synchronization, but their page doesn't say anything about files that I've found, that's kind of out unless you only use iDisk. From what I've been reading and hearing, iPad does a lot better but doesn't completely resolve it (I think Andy Inhatko called it a reprise of sneakernet), at least docking it makes a backup of everything that's on it.

Mobile Me (iDisk) does a good job for any files you keep on the disk. They are synchronized between all computers. There are a couple of problems with it:
1. If you have a file open on two different computers (or if you change a file and then shut down the computer before it synchronizes, and then open it on a different computer), they can get out of sync.
2. This one is not well known - but Time Machine does not back up your local iDisk folder - so if there's a problem with a file on the iDisk, you don't have a backup. There is a third party solution for backing up iDisk, though.
3. Limited size. My iDisk is 20 GB which is plenty for word processing documents, spreadsheets, etc, but far too small to back up my library of video, photos, and music.
What I've started doing is a little different. I bought a Mac Mini Server and have ALL my files on that. Any time I create a new document, I save it to that server. That way, it's always available to all my computers. If I forget and leave a file open on one computer, it tells me and allows me to open as read-only.
For my iPad, I use LogMeIn to connect to the server. My iPad now has access to not only all my files, but also all the applications that don't run on the iPad (including Flash).
This isn't perfect. It counts on always having internet access - and there's a delay, depending on how fast Internet service is in a location. But it works very well.
I don't know where you heard the screen scratches easily, but it's not true.
iLounge reviews are pretty reliable, and iphone screens scratch easily as well. being that they're both made from the same material, i'd assume they both are susceptible to scratches. of course, when i say scratch, i'm not talking about gouges or anything. however, even with normal use, you'll get lots of light scuffs. some may be fine w/ that; to me, it's distracting. plus, i prefer the matte look w/ less glare that the screen guard provides. that's just me though.

The example substances that are harder than glass seem to be relatively exotic substances, it looks like some jewelry can do it. I've managed to put some minor scratches into my screen, but I'm around stuff like sandpaper and carbide a lot in my work day.
That said, if you have one with oleophobic coating, I understand that is easier to scratch than plain glass.

I didn't mean to imply that it was impossible to scratch just that it doesn't "scratch easily". It's possible that Apple uses a special glass that is more resilient to shock and bending and therefore less hard than typical glass, but I would assume that it's still harder than any of the plastic screens we've seen on LCD displays for decades.

There are different kinds of plastics, my experience with plastic screen surface on my old Sanyo was better than my experience with a glass screen face. On the whole, a glass surface may well be better for most people, I don't know.

By nail, do you mean fingernail? That's hardly a measure of scratch resistance. Fingernails are very low on the hardness scale, glass scratches fingernail, not the other way around. Glass is pretty good for scratch resistance, but somehow some mundane things can scratch it.
My nearby Apple and Best Buy stores seemed to have plenty of them. Best Buy's web site said they didn't have any, but they seemed to be readily available. The iPad areas were busy too, all reps were busy completing sales. I couldn't stop and ask any questions, I needed to get things done and I might have been too tempted to buy.
I hear Apple has this means of placing orders over the internet and it gets delivered to your door, no need to go back to a store to pick it up or stand in line. This newfangled internet order method might be the best waiting list.

I either would have to pre-sign for it and let FedEx leave my $830 shiny new toy at the door of my duplex...OR drive 45 minutes (further than the nearest Apple store) to FedEx's office and pick it up there during their business hours.
The choice was pretty simple for me. If I could have actually been home to pick it up, I would have pre-ordered it. My boss and a co-worker both have one and they had their wives sign for it since they were home anyway. I'm definitely jealous.
So, has anyone that did reserve one via the "notify me" option actually gotten it yet?

How accurate are the web site's posted waits? The web site said 7-10 days when I placed my order, the estimated shipping date in the order confirmation email was 16 days away from the order date. The actual shipping date ended up being "only" 13 days, but it just seems shaky for the web site to say 7-10 days and then instantly notified of estimated shipment nearly a week longer wait time than the longest wait advertised on finishing placing the order.

we never get any inside info on the factories in China. are they running 24/7?
The last news i got they were under investigation by china gov after there was waves of suicides by employees. Maybe its not going so well in there...
