I would've told him you are taking the money from his account to pay for it but in reality left the money in his account. Learns the value of money and gets to keep his money for college at the same time!

I ended up replacing a screen on a 13" MacBook Pro for free last week because the customer bought a Netbook bag from our store and the strap broke as he threw it over his shoulder....he didn't even buy the MacBook from our store. $560 for that repair. Actually the clip didn't break on the bag, he didn't check to make sure it was secure.....

In case my screen ever goes faulty, where is your store?

    Isn't free speech amazing?

I am so surprised about some of the posts. For crying out loud - This was a "feel good" story. It's a win-win situation. Everyone went home happy - Except some of the disgruntled poster who wished it was them who received the free iPad instead of the lady in the story.

    Awesome, nicely played.

Actually it is illegal to refuse to accept cash as a form of payment in a retail store. The only limitation is on how much can be in the form of coinage.

    Can you cite a source?

The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal tender," which states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.

the real reason for all of this is control. apple wants to exactly know who the person is that uses this ipad. control, control, control! wasn't it apple who predicted the big brother world with pc? now they are acting even worse. and considering that the ipad can exactly show YOUR position, it's quite a scary thought to know that apple wants to forbid you to anonymous use this machine.

imagine steve jobs would have to implant a gps sensor into his body, and let this position be shown on a website so that everyone can see where he is at the moment. wouldn't THIS scare HIM? but that's (nearly) exactly what apple can do with US!

scary... ps: please watch my new video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FW-lrMXLBE

Yup. If someone wanted one badly enough they'd find other ways to buy one. Unless you're that lady who didn't know how to take her cash to a Wal Mart to buy a prepaid Visa card to buy her iPad at the Apple store, before running to ABC to raise a holy stink, and then to have every journalist in the nation jump on their high soapbox and scream bloody murder about what a travesty it was she couldn't use cash. Talk about making things more complicated than they needed to be.

And did anyone ask her exactly why she wanted an iPad? An expensive picture viewer, perhaps? Or how she planned to buy apps, books, and music, and other media subscriptions so that her iPad isn't completely useless since it's largely dependent on the Internet for content? Let me guess, cash?

I didn't know about the policy, but wasn't going to raise a fuss since I'm aware (from having done retail myself) that there's nothing illegal about the restriction. I was going to buy the ipad for him with my debit card and then go deposit his cash into my account on the way home.

But then I figured give it a shot and politely asked to speak to a manager. This by the way was an an LA store in an area that is rumored to get a lot of resellers trying to buy stuff.

I explained the situation to the manager who totally waived the rule and let Lucas buy his ipad himself, with cash. The manager even rang Lucas up himself, helped him activate the ipad and told him about a couple of games his son (who is about the same age) really likes.

Kind of makes me wonder if Ms Campbell actually spoke to a manager or just took her no and her indignation out the door and to ABC.

Wow, buzzkill much? Glad your son got his iPad with cash and got a little one on one time with the manager, but you don't need to go and deflate the good outcome of Ms Campbells actions....

    nm.... TBell already said it.

Let's just say it's surprising how many people are unaware of retailers' rights. No, they do not have to accept cash. Come to that, they don't have to offer refunds either, though most choose to.
