To take advantage of the new 720p-capable HD video camera in iPhone 4 will be an all-new, $4.99 mobile version of iMovie for editing videos, Apple announced Monday.

Final Cut Pro developer Randy Ubillos demonstrated how iMovie on the iPhone works like it does on the desktop. He said it is "one of the most exciting apps" he's ever worked on.

Using the multitouch display, users can pinch to trim clips in the timeline, and even record video directly into the timeline using the HD camera. The geolocation of the device can be included, and music from iTunes or supplied theme music can be added to clips on the fly.

The system takes advantage of the 5 megapixel lens in iPhone 4, which is capable of recording 720p video at 30 frames per second.

The new iMovie app for iPhone allows users to combine movie clips, add dynamic transitions and themes and include photos and music. It will be available in the App Store for $4.99.

Apple has highlighted the following capabilities of the new high-definition camera in iPhone 4:

Edit video right on iPhone. No need to wait until you?re back at your computer to edit video. You can perform basic editing right in the Camera app. Just drag to select start and end points on a filmstrip.

Turn your video clips into a finished movie. With iMovie on iPhone 4. You?re on vacation, and you want to create a video postcard of everything you did that day and share it with your family. Just use the iMovie app ? coming soon to the App Store for just $4.99. Built just for iPhone 4, iMovie lets you combine and edit video clips, polish your movies with dynamic themes and transitions, add music and photos, and share your finished movies with the world.

Tap to focus video. Say you?re recording a scene with subjects in both the foreground and the background. How do you make sure the camera focuses where you want? Just tap that part of the image on the iPhone 4 display. The camera immediately focuses on it and adjusts exposure to match the lighting. When you want to focus on another part of the scene, just tap again.

Make a video self-portrait.

In addition to the high-definition camera on the back, iPhone 4 has a VGA-quality camera on the front, above the display, that lets you see yourself while you record. So it?s perfect for taking a video self-portrait ? no more guessing if you?re in the frame or accidentally cropping yourself out altogether.

Share video anywhere. Say you?re in the middle of a text message conversation when you see something video-worthy. Tap the camera icon in Messages to record on the fly and send it to your buddy via MMS. Or select some video from the Camera Roll and attach it to a new email message, ready to send. Publishing to your MobileMe gallery or to YouTube is also just a tap away. And you can easily sync all the video you shoot on iPhone 4 back to your Mac or PC.

Obviously, this iMovie will also be available on the iPad (even though the device doesn't have a camera). As long as you can move video clips to it.

And when it does, it will be a litmus test for editing video on a touch-screen device. Adobe, Avid, Ulead and others who currently make consumer- and professional-grade NLEs should quickly get a clue where the future of desktop is going and figure out how to cash in on iOS 4.

Can anyone say proliferation of homemade sex videos? Now, with better transitions and good music in the background.

You can connect the iPhone to the iPad directly with the Camera Connection Kit and move pictures and video over USB.

Or, you can connect via WiFi (both have 811.n)-- there's an app for that.

EDIT: NOTE: the above statement is incorrect. The WiFi connection does not currently support moving video.

Realistically, an iPad would make a pretty heavy and clumsy camera-- and the iPhone would make a pretty small video editor...

    ...so, best of both worlds.

OH, BTW... for those naysayers... It's too bad that the iPhone and the iPad don't have a "proper OS" that would allow the devices to be used for "content creation."

I HOPE it will be available.

I'm just surprised that Apple didn't make more mention of iOS 4 for the iPad. In fact, they didn't mention it at all as far as I know.

Now bring on the rest of the iLife suite. I am thinking of iPhoto in particular, especially on the iPad to rid it of its tethering to a "real" computer and make it even more useful as a feature-complete device covering most casual computer users' needs (my Mom's for example).

Well, I do have an app that lets me use my iPhone as a camera for the iPad. My 3G won't shoot video through it, but the 3GS, and I would imagine the new iPhone 4 will.

I misspoke, the current WiFi connection between iPhone 3GS and iPad does not currently support Video, just images,

What would be nice, though, would be future FireWire support for both the iPad and iPhone. The 30-pin connector is capable of supporting both USB and FW. (I have an iPod video that connects with FW).

    ABOUT DANG TIME!!!!!

I've been waiting for an iMovie for iPhone app since the 3GS was first announced. I have been using ReelDirector for now, but it looks like their time may be coming to an end. (it was a kick butt video editing app and they should be proud that they were the ONLY ones to make one before Apple finally got their iMovie out there. We'll miss ya ReelDirector)

I don't think the FW connections are still there, internally.

Besides the screen res and video conference. iMovie for the iPhone is probably the biggest feature and seller for iPhone 4 yet nobody's talking about it... Unbelievable!

I'm getting iPhone 4 just because of iMovie...

Yeah, iMovie really looks phenomenal. I do wish it had a few more themes though.

Also, if they followed with a mobile version of GarageBand sometime in the future, I would be in gadget heaven.

I wonder if this will play on a 3GS for SD video editing?
