No one, to date, has actually gotten voice control right. Either the error rate is too high, it's slow, you have to jump through too many hoops, or it's just easier to press some buttons.
My Motorola V710 and E815 both had REALLY good voice controls. Almost no errors, even with an address book with hundreds of entries. No "training", no hoops. Just push one button, say "call addabox mobile" and BAM it calls you. When I finally switched to my first iPhone, it was a huge step back not having this feature.
I am with the side who thinks there's a double meaning in the "talk iPhone." The speech recog/personal assistant is going to be a major new selling point. I just hope it understands my Australian accent.

The phone, like myself, probably won't understand most of what you say.
There is a danger in reading too much into this. Here's a nice list of all the special events with tag lines - http://bit.ly/qhGvME; they don't always have special meaning

Good list but where's all the iPhone events (+one more thing) on that last? Clearly something is missing.
Or "talk" could be targeting Nuance's voice technology. Just wanted to throw that in there
And let's not forget Apple's purchase of AI company, Siri. Perhaps Apple has been designing a new microphone system, as the case and display couldn't really get that much better. That would allow more fluent command of your iPhone regardless of noisy or unpredictable audio conditions.
Hmmmmmmmmm the keyword "talk" lends to thoughts of some kind of focus on voice? LTE-prepared iPhone?
...
I know I'm really scraping the barell here. It would be nice if all Apple stores did become LTE towers somehow. Too bad there were no remodelings for higher (much higher) ceilings! Lol
Oh dear. Lots of new tech for features I have no interest in.
As a 3G owner I might have to upgrade just to have a phone that can run its own OS.
Where do you get the October month from? It's nowhere in the icon. Same mistake AI makes in the article when they describe the icons...
Deductive reasoning. The inclusion of Tuesday and 4 point to next Tuesday, October 4th, which concides with it's typical week long lead in before an event. Same goes for the 10:00; that could technically be 10pm or Eastern Time, but there is precedence for 10am Pacific Time.

I like that! 'Deductive reasoning'. Of course I was splitting hairs there, but you are absolutely right. Thanks for explaining.
BTW, haven't seen another thought on this, but while it's got cues and info "cleverly" embedded in the invite, this is about the lamest event announcement thingie I can recall since Apple became so event driven. First sign of less sweating the details in the Post-Steve times? Or am I just lacking in taste, and it's the coolest ever?

Not if you're buying it as a fashion accessory. If it doesn't have arbitrary changes to the form factor, you're just another schlub with last year's toy.
Ahh, those were the days - when every car manufacturer changed over nearly the whole body line every fall. It peaked with the successively amazing '55, '56 and '57 Chevies and no one knew at the time, but Detroit's decline set in slowly but shortly thereafter. There was a classic Playboy cartoon about the competing new aesthetic - the cops have just removed a gag from a tied up man and he tells them, "They made their getaway in a '63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68 or 69 Volkwagen....."

- This october 4th event calls it Let's talk iPhone! so, what's with the new iPods? That one is too obvious.
- A lot of people do not buy iPhones because of the contract.
- Apple needs to give more options.

HSPA+ would give ATT a leg up, but no one else I know of. And it does have to accomodate some minor changes to grab that ungrabbed CDMA/TDMA company in China and Sprint.

It ain't stellar, so yes, this is all "post-Steve". But Apple now has more pressing issues to execute on, it need not be so constantly clever in everything. iOS5, iPhone5, iPad3, redesigned MacBooks, plus prepping the product pipeline. There's a lot to be done that need not be too clever. That's where Tim Cook comes in. Let's just hope he and someone else can step up to the plate of vision and innovation close enough to Steve in the next three years. But for the immediate future, it's about smooth execution and just making enough gosh darned iPhones and iPads for everyone especially China. China, China, China. Scary, but a lot of the fate of humanity's financial future rests on China. Or at least the "markets" think so, for this decade anyway.
I just wanted to put in my input here. I've been considering what the "1" might mean and I have come to a conclusion that it simply signifies that they had a "missed release" (June; like a missed call). I doubt it signifies much else.

*CALENDAR- the date October 4 Tuesday
*CLOCK- the time 10 am
*MAP-the place apple headquarters infinite loop
*PHONE- with "1" on the top Means maybe 1 iPhone to launch?
Did anyone mention the fact that it shows a mechanical clock rather than a digital clock? Just saying...
That's the standard clock icon, used to show in this case the event is at 10am. Nothing more, nothing less, IMO.

Until now, there has been no such thing as an iPhone event.

This could mean that there will be fewer changes than anticipated... just the standard stuff.
j/k
The 4th of October as a double entendre.

And in case that seems like a leap, the last Tuesday to fall on the 4th was in January and the next one won't be till a year from now, so.....
So... you're saying the "new" iPhone won't really be available for another year yet ?!?!?!
Damn!!!... I was actually looking forward to replacing my 3GS next month!

Lengthy article on "Assistant" here

Let's talk iPhone! The only thing that means is that iPod Touch its going to disappear.
Apple knows that device it's a waste of technology
Okay, I'll bite. In what way?
You can buy it as a Touch if you don't want the phone
So it's not at all going to disappear in any way, shape, or form. Got it.
And LIKE FUN the carriers would let it be a "use whatever plan you want" device. iPhone (proper) sales would stop existing entirely.
- There wasn't a new iPhone this year's june. It's been always in june since 2007.
Well, July save the first model, but who's counting.
- Apple needs to give more options.
How is that a 'fact'? It's subjective as all get out.
