It's like the political landscape. Everyone calling each other names. Buy what you want. We want people to be respectful of their creations and those of others. So tired of people lobbing bombs at each other. Sheesh.....
Ballmer was wrong about the iPod, iPhone, and the iPad. I guess Ballmer is just reaching since his job might be on the line and he's just being insecure about it.
Yeah, probably by the same idiot Executive we run into that do not understan the concept of a corporate Implementation manuel - and corporate fonts.
half my day is spent now rejecting presentations made on mickey mouse tablet apps with random font selection - we at least get a decent laugh when we open them.
everything of value is still produced on a real OS - either OSX or Windows.
Type 1 fonts are supported by every iPad, and are typically used in ANY corporate font set. Sounds like you have no clue what you are talking about. The bulk of implementation manuals that I've seen are finished product in the .PDF format for easy distribution, which supports Type 1 fonts and iPad formatting. In addition, Salesforce.com, the leader in cloud computing and CRM, also makes their sales apps VERY iPad friendly, and can be found in just about every major retailer field and corporate level board rooms when discussing business results and future direction. If you are laughing when people bring in iPads or tablets to conduct business, then you and your company mentality are already antiquated. It might possibly be you that they are laughing at, not the other way around. Cassette tapes are also outdated, just in case you didn't know.
Anyone who says they got an iPad or a Surface, or a Nexus purely for productive purposes is insane... or lying.
I believe you are forgetting those people who are given iPads at work. I think it can be safely assumed that their employers handed these iPads out with purely productive intentions.
That "recreational tablet" sells between 14-17 million per quarter now, with over 100 million sold to date. And that's just from Apple. No OEMs involved.
MS is delusional. Apple ate their lunch years ago. MS isn't even worth looking at anymore. The big news is happening elsewhere.

Actually you're sort of out in left field on this one. As the person responsible for approving presentations and rejecting the many that don't follow the corporate guidelines it is an admission of failure for your department. If you are in the marketing department or the graphics department it is your responsibility to provide suitable templates for Powerpoint, Word and Keynote and offer technical support and training to the executives or their assistants so that everyone is following the corporate guidelines for font usage and logo placement, etc. The fact that a corporate style guide exists is not enough because everyone knows that it is almost impossible to be an executive and a graphic artist with equal competence in both fields. As the peon who has to deal with such design implementations it is your job to fill the gap.
Since MS held a funeral for the iPhone, I wonder what they're going to do for Windows Phone, because that thing is stillborn. And even if it had survived and made it's way safely out of the womb, it should have been aborted.
It is very good news that Microsoft has finally decided to enter the 21st Century because perhaps it will start to convince the dinosaurs who control the IT departments of so many corporations that real people actually want computing devices like those Apple has been making for the last 15 years.
But to then go off slagging iPads as 'recreational tablets', they once again fail to understand what the vast majority of 'real' people want.
These real people don't want to waste their valuable time (at home or work) battling with poorly designed and poorly integrated hardware, software with inconsistent user interfaces. These real people don't want to waste their valuable time or money in a constant battle with malware writers and cyber-criminals who so readily exploit earlier versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. These real people don't want to waste their valuable time or money depending on the aforesaid dinosaurs of the IT industry to untangle the messes they inevitable encounter when using Microsoft products designed for 20th Century devices.
It is high time Microsoft really got its act together and grasped the opportunities presented by the 21st Century rather than protecting its rapidly fading 20th Century business model and the IT dinosaurs that depend on it.
Sinofsky's comments remind me of what DOS and then Windows power users have always said about using Apple products; "that's not REAL computing". These are left-over echoes of the high priesthood of computing that only a select few had the intelligence and dedication to enter into. Microsoft products have always appealed to those who thought REAL computing must be damn hard and therefore users of Apple products were merely playing with toys. Sounds like Microsoft is clinging to that meme even while slowing sinking in the La Brea tar pits of tech history.
Right iPad Mini is 'recreational.' Because there's so much more productivity software available on Windows 8 RT Surface.
While it's one-upmanship to call iPad (Mini or not) recreational, if Office on Windows RT works seamlessly, it can trump most other apps all by itself.

I'm afraid you're either being disingenuous or are simply ignorant.
Kindles added. Now it really gets busy. There are three different Kindles. Two nominal 7" with slightly different resolution aspect ratio's straddling the Nexus (in green) plus the 8.9 size.
These are in accurate proportion according to manufacturers specs. (apologies for an initial data entry error on the MS Surface) Draw your own conclusions as to effective screen size.

Yep. Apples are "toys". If you want a "real" computer you get DOS!

That MS Surface you have up there looks like it's pretty much 4:3 when it's actually the16:9, which is slightly more widescreen than the 16:10 Nexus 7.
Also, I'd add the Kindle and Kindle HD sizes in that mix as the are likely the closest per unit competitors the iPad will have.
Sorry Steven. You can promote windoze 8 all you want, but crap is still crap no matter how brightly-coloured the child-friendly icons are.
And what make you think handing out 'left handed compliments' about an Apple product is appropriate?
I've been using it for months. Win 8 and Win Server 2012 are not crap. They are confusing as hell on many levels and I think they will hurt their future business foundation because they veered so far off the reservation when their constituents don't want to relearn a new UI but the Win 8 foundation is pretty damn good, as is Win Phone 8.
Flip this around and it could be stated that if you want to use Surface for recreational purposes there are better options. Think they will admit to that?
You know how Cook basically says the Surface having an identify crisis?

And Surface running Windows RT is for pros, right? Hmmmph....!

So how are those Windows Phone sales going?

That looks like computer graphics from the age of 2001: A Space Odyssey
