The iPad Mini uses in-cell technology, and the pixels will be appear to be glued on to the screen, almost popping out at you, like on the iPhone 5 I believe. I'm also pretty sure that it's much brighter, has better contrast and much more accurate color levels than any old iPhone display.

I look forward to holding an iPad Mini in my own hands, and trying it out for myself, but I have a feeling that I'll be happy with the display. It's obviously not going to be sharper than the iPad 3 Retina display which I use everyday, but I believe that the iPad Mini will have a pretty decent display.

I hope you're right and the newer displays are better. One would think Apple wouldn't dare put one out with an inferior display given the heavy competition..

Because if it's too pixelated I'll be forced to buy the 4th gen iPad with Retina. Not only will it be more expensive, but too heavy for my liking.

We'll all know for sure in less than a week, when we can walk into any Apple store and see them with our own eyes. image

Based on all of the information available, it will be superior to the iPad 2 display, because the display size is smaller, which gives it a higher DPI, meaning smaller pixels and sharper images/text. Also, it uses in-cell technology, and I don't believe that the iPad 2 did, so I am expecting a display that is a bit better than the iPad 2, at the very least. And the iPad 2 had a pretty decent display, IMO.

I believe the reason it took this long is because most people don't know about it. When an iPhone get released everyone I know knows about it. Even those who don't own iPhones. Most people I know didn't know about the iPad mini. As far as I know, Apple didn't even air the TV ad yet.

I saw it in the news and newspapers so I don't think many people didn't know about it. Many might be waiting for it to get closer to the holidays before pulling the trigger.

it is obvious by now that Apple simply does not make enough of them at launch.

What does that even mean? 'Not meeting the hype'? You talking about analysts pulling numbers out of their ass? These products are selling more than anything else in the industry. 'Hype' is a useless, irrelevant, subjective term that means nothing. Apple still has to abide by the rules of reality, which includes logistics and manufacturing issues. No other company on the planet can produce and sell 5 million of an extremely complex electronic product like the iPhone 5 in a launch weekend, but apparently for you they 'didnt make enough', cause you know, all they needed to do was produce more pixie dust or something. Logistical realities means that Apple will nevr be able to fulfill demand at launch for EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO WANTS ONE. That doesnt mean they're purposely holding back stock, or that its even possible for them to produce more.

Especally so if, as is rumoured, supply of components such as the screen is (currently) highly constrained.

Companies sell out for two reasons:

They underestimated how popular their product would be.

They just couldn't make enough.
For Tim Cook, an unfulfilled order is a potential lost sale. The idea that a company will under-produce to generate hype, especially this close to Christmas, is laughable.

    I haven't pre-ordered any.

I will make up my mind when I visit an Apple store and see how it feels and looks when I'm holding it. I'm definitely not getting an iPad 4 though, since I have the iPad 3. My next full sized iPad will be the iPad 5.

Why do people seem to like the white one better? The black one is imho nicer, and well, it's easier on the eyes to look at a black enclosure than at a white one???

Why is this so hard for people to understand? Especially with a company like apple that doesn't need to constrain supplies to generate demand.

Strange as I find the iPad 2 sharper than the iPhone 3g and you would think the other way around given the differences in screen size.

The pixel density on the mini is sharper than my 11" Macbook Air that I use everyday, so it shouldn't be a problem for me. However, for those who are coming from using an iPad 3 Retina display, I imagine that they won't be too happy with it. I owned a white Verizon model, but sold it months ago because I barely used it.

I'm thinking of getting a 32GB WiFi+3G White iPad-mini to go with the first-gen iPad.

Unfortunately, Apple's 14-day no quibble return policy means that a certain percentage of orders will be to people who will have no intention of keeping the iPad-mini. Having said that, I bought my 1st-gen iPad thinking if it wasn't to my liking I would just return it. Decided within one hour to keep it.

The family is complete: iPad 4 = Daddy iOS device; iP4/S & iPT = 2.5 Kids; all we needed was a Mommy iOS device and now we have her...

I think they mention it becasue its the same pixels per inch. But the 2 screens are using completly different screen tech indeed, which will makethe mini look a lot better.

Go watch the cnet video, the guys says it looks much better then the ipad2 screen.

Imo this is why they need to go for unexpected product cycles instead of being on a predictable calender. Too many people know about the cycles so it creates impossible to meet demand at launch.

Does the ipad 3 used in-cell tech and IPS? Those screen are much more vivid and it may make the mini look better if youre vision is not good enough to see the resolution difference.

What technical issues? Technology takes leaps and bounds almost daily. A Japanese company just made a 9.6 4K LCD screen.

Can those screens be built in a quantity of say 4 million per month, not require superpowerful CPU GPU, large battery, and be be built for, say, $50 apiece?

See, practicality is as much of an issue as technology.

You sold me on it Apple ][. I'll be doing the same- ill try it out in store and if I like the screen enough (ill bring my iPad 2), I'll order it up from Macmall.

I'm with you on the iPad 4 and 5. You can almost guarantee theyre going to make the next iPad similar in design to the Touch, iPhone, and iPad mini- which is what I would wait for too. Just like Phil said when he was talking about the iMac after they did a side by side- it's funny how in one day it can make the previous model look antiquated. I think the mini does that to the iPad.

I'm absolutely in love with the touch, iPhone, and mini designs- prettiest, lightest (yet strongest) iOS devices ever- even if black does scratch. :)
