The last remaining "big cat" name is Cougar. Done.
The cougar (Puma concolor), also known as the puma, mountain lion, panther, or catamount (Wikipedia)
I think the next OS will give 'touch' a nod in anticipation of OX 11 (which will not be a cat), so I agree with Apple][ that it will be called 'Pussy'.
Maybe "Liger"? Wouldn't that be hilarious: a cross between Lion and Tiger! Ballmer would lose his mind trying to figure out what that means. His answer: developers! developers! developers! developers! developers! developers! ....

I question whether it will even have a cat name at all this time around.
I do expect it to come by early next year with a release late in the Summer.
Or a statement that Mac OS X is getting long in the tooth.
Just a guess but cats till 11 seems logical to me.
I can't wait! Another opportunity to fail to fix the dozens of bugs every new release since Snow Leopard has inflicted upon the Finder, all in exchange for more Facebook access, which I need about as much as I need the voice of Howard Stern bone-inducted into my molars as I sleep.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's better? Is it any better?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one better, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be computing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your App. Where can you go from there? Where?
Okay, let's get the obligatory whining out of the way.
I hope Apple fixes the (insert favorite nonexistent or rare bug that only six people have but claim it's a widespread known issue that Apple has ignored over the last three iterations of OS X.) Don't they test this stuff before they release it.
Glad I got that off my chest before OS X 10.9 is out and declared an epic fail by the "power users."
Don't forget the obligatory "Mac OSX has become iOS Pro", "dumbed-down", etc, even though there has never been a shred of truth in this.
I doubt if they have anything on the go that it would be a "beta". A beta would be what they released to developers for testing, like the developer previews. Perhaps they have an "alpha" build going...

Oh darn. You beat me to it. I was going to suggest Liger myself. So with a tip of the hat to Wikipedia…
The liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion (Panthera leo MacOS) and a tigress (Panthera tigris iOS). Thus, it has parents with the same genus Core but of different species UIs.

What the hell are you ranting about? It's an OPTION. You don't HAVE to turn it on. For me, I find having events integrated in my calendar and notification extremely useful. If you have no need of it, it has absolutely no effect on your experience. Oh, and strangely ML has been the most stable version of OSX for me- ever.
No, that's not how this works. One data point doesn't let you say this.
I'm pretty sure that Apple is on the record as stating that OS X is now on an annual refresh schedule. Phil Schiller stated it himself when Mountain Lion was announced.

If we're going to rationalize OS names then Android should be Honey Badger since "honey badger don't give a shit [about other people's IP]" and Windows 8 should be platypus because it's monstrosity of nature.

Mac OS X LOLcat
Genetics! Genetics! Genetics!
Just a guess but cats till 11 seems logical to me.
That would be a good name to suggest the 'links' getting closer with iOS...
But they don't have to have a 10.9 before moving to 11.0.

Our OS goes all the way to eleven!
I'm thinking hawks for the next family line. (Would have posted the picture, but I don't have permission for that.)

Ahh you beat me to it.
Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most Operating Systems go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One better.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten better and make ten be the top number and make that a little better?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

I propose "Griffin," a mythical winged creature with lion's body and eagle's wings. A good metaphor for OSX, which is growing iOS plumage.
