The only arrogance here is with the conveniently anonymous bloggers and commenters who pretend to speak for the poor and underprivileged, who proselytize a wonderful socialist state where nobody has to actually work in order to afford the "good life" and the accouterments thereof.

I hope Apple will never change their business inherited from Steve Jobs in end of 90s.

(of course, to adapt to new technologies, new tools and a new world)

Basically : to be a company doing only the best computing device the technology and business allows.

    -
there are others companies for any kind of others needs. But we need, at least, ONE Apple.

at least ONE. Let Apple be Apple.

I think the "less expensive phone" is a red herring of sorts.

They already have lots of products that are affordable for almost every person in every category and country, even if those products are last years products.  These products aren't "phones" only because a simple piece of software (which is what a "phone" has become) isn't available on them.  This is because of the carriers and the way they conduct their business, not Apple.

If Apple could simply put phone software of some kind on *all* of their products, there would no longer be a need for a cheaper "phone."

This is what everyone was expecting them to do when they came out with the iPhone and for the next few seasons after that, but so far they've failed to do so and failed to convince the carriers that this is a good idea.  Apple just needs to step up to the plate and start fighting for the consumer in the horribly corrupt cell carrier market.  They really should have bought something like Skype instead of giving it to Microsoft to kill.

"Phones" are rapidly becoming old news and will soon be irrelevant if only the carriers can be either evaded or gotten onboard in this rather obvious and inevitable evolution.

Mass producing cheap phones is an idea from the 1990's.  I would rather Apple look to the future as is their wont, and evade the whole question of a cheap "phone" altogether.  They need to get behind the idea that everything could be a phone and that data is data, whether it's "minutes" or movies.  Why (the f*ck), should I have to have a phone in my pocket, just to connect my tablet to the network when like many people today, I don't even receive phone calls?  Why do I have to sit through an explanation of a complicated phone contract every time I upgrade my phone when absolutely none of the details of minutes and long-distance and all that other "phone crap" matters to me at all?

They need to cannibalise the iPhone to move forward.

They need to make everything a phone, which will ironically make the "phone" disappear altogether.

Not a huge screen just a tad bigger.

The dev tools just need to be able to effortlessly export different screen resolutions to avoid fragmentation.

I suspect Tim's comments are misdirection. The buttons have already been pushed.

So basically they're just going to copy what Samsung et al are already doing?

In addition, they've got to adopt more strategies towards the market. Avertising is small when compared to Samsung. $14 billion in total for Samsung last year compared to about $1 billion for Apple. It's aking a big part of the difference in sales.

For those who believe that marketshare is worthless, I'll say that it's not. As the market shifts, so do developers. This isn't speculation, it's fact.

I'd also like to see Macbook Airs at $899. Mini's at $599, and iMac's at $999. Except for Air's, they've been there before. There's no reason why they can't be there again.

Why? Why do they need a tablet cheaper than $329?

When the first iPad came out everyone was predicting it would be between $800-$1200. People were shocked at the $499 price. It was a device from science fiction. Now, only a couple years later, we have the iPad mini, a tablet that is infinitely more capable than the original, MUCH lighter, thinner, faster, more portable, with 2 cameras, an almost infinite library of apps,etc- for $329. Why have we become so synical, so spoiled, as to not have a sense of history and context, and consider this "expensive"? Because cheaper tablets can be found, which are shittier in every single sense? I'm amazed daily at my iPad mini, which I use for a variety of tasks such as reading, browsing, emailing, gaming, and everything else under the sun, in a form factor that is infinitely versatile, portable, and flexible- and which cost merely $329. It doesn't need to be cheaper, it needs to retain the same pricepoint while becoming even more capable. Apple didn't get to where it is today by cutting corners and going for marketshare by releasing bargain bin products. This will do nothing but chip away at brand value and decrease useability and satisfaction. Maybe good for some short term slaes, but catastrophic for the long term. We have enough shitty electronic gadgets produced by every company on the planet, with limited shelf-life and no long term vision. We don't need more.

" The fact that (some) shareholders and others want to change Apple from what has made them successful to other business model that havs failed or is failing? Yes, I agree, how arrogant!
    "

YES, it's exactly that. Apple has a specific model, a specific vision, and it's why they can produce the kind of device (and software) they do.

If we force a change of their business, to do cheap commodized hardware and software stuff like everyone, the company, as before (end 80-90s), will be just as dull and cold than Dell.

Do we need a new Lenovo ? a new motorola or a new samsung ? we already have Lenovo, Motorola and Samsung.

Who need a new Sony ? there are already one Sony, it's Sony !

    Investors ?

    NOT the users !

I am tired of hearing Tim Cook repeating the same mantra as Steve. Be your own man Tim and get this company going, again. If everything is so wonderful, why has the stock tanked. This is BS from Tim Cook!

I think the biggest news here is that Apple has built buttons for achieving market dominance?? How did we miss this in their patent filings? Tim Cook's iPhone must have a special market dominance app.

What exactly do you want Tim to do to "get this company going again"?

Because you're not actually paying attention to the stock.

So Apple creates a smaller and larger phone so they capture a range of sizes an prices like Android OEM's do.  Then Wall Street and the tech press do a collective "meh" and wonder if that's all Apple has up its sleeve.

    They're wondering that now.

Possibly your first post I would have to disagree with Melgross!

Apple do not need a cheap phone to address developing markets. Developing markets (such as China and other parts of Asia) have a rapidly growing middle class that can and will afford an iPhone.
Though I do agree that Apple should spend a bit more on advertising.

I agree. Allow the market to develop naturally.

Open more outlets whether Apple Stores or Apple Authorized Dealers.
Create solutions for China Mobile (1)
Allow the standard pricing model for previous models suit the need for the lower cost market

    (1) The latest announcement from Qualcomm about the RF 360 suggests a front end solution that will enable 3G TD-SCDMA and 4G LTE-TDD.

A iPhone "Nano" would, at some point, perhaps not be a bad idea but at the moment "the iPhone maker collected a whopping 69 percent of handset industry profits last year." and the recently noted success of the 3Gs (!!) let alone the 4, 4s and the 5 all speak to the current inventory being quite nice, thanyouverymuch.
