This is perfect example of a cock fight, Samsung is just trying to show their is bigger than everyone else, and in typical fashion most women will just say it is too damn big and to keep it away from them.
This is really not a phone. It caters to people that wants mobile internet the most. But then why not buy an iPad mini with cellular? The answer is simple. AT&T, Verizon do not subsidize iPad mini because it has no phone function. In essence people buy this instead of iPad mini because they can save hundreds of dollars. But then if they don't have a separate phone, it is inconvenient to use this device to call because it is heavy and big.
While we were sitting over the twenty minutes we were there, neither used their Samsungs for anything but phone calls. Never pulled out the stylus. Never used an app.
They were on the phone trying to find out if anyone had seen their lost stylus!
Poor customers who are gonna be wowed by the giant screen only to be stuck with this product for a number of years.
And strategy wise, I’m not sure it is good to have products like this being dumped in the market in a "sure we got that" kind of fashion... Those that end up with this "phone" will eventually get to learn that it is a clunky phone and too small a tablet. I would bet that it will probably hurt Samsung as a brand in the end. Shot in the foot if you ask me.
It's a good thing I can count on Apple to only release one flagship iPhone per year.
Why do you feel that's a good thing?
I can see some benefits to doing things differently:
Flagship 1: Destroyer class. Sleek, comparatively compact device for those who feel that how you use it matters more than size.
Flagship 2: Carrier class: Larger unit with controls that are less about quick input and more about immersive control.
They do it with computers -- Air for the light-and-compact set, Pro for the worker bee -- why not phones?
I'm not sure why an annual release cycle is better either. Shorter cycles allow capitalizing on trends and bringing new features and technologies to market quicker.
I'm not presuming to say Apple is doing it "wrong," just that I can see at least some advantages to alternative approaches.
Galaxy Mega will impress first-time smartphone buyers the way "Transformers" fascinates 9-year-olds. Two years later, they'll look at the Mega (and "Transformers") and think "Wow, I sure got fooled way back then."
Mark my words, this giant phone thing is a trend and WILL die off. Samsung is just currently milking it for all it's worth, just like any company who does not respect it's consumers.
The trend will only die off when cell phones as we know them are replaced by something else like watches or glasses, and even then maybe not. I think the average phone will be 5" or slightly more in a few years. That only becomes more likely as giant phones like these redefine the limits of what consumers imagine a phone could be. In light of these, the large Galaxy S4 seems quite petite.
Typical Android OEM... ANOTHER flagship phone release when they JUST released their "flagship" S4. Didn't Samesung already say they're releasing MORE flagship phones running their new Tarzan OS by the end of the year? If I were an Android (namely Samesung) customer who just spent top dollar for their latest flagship phone, I'd be royally PO'd.

These aren't flagship models, they're just enormous. Their screens are very low resolution for the size (1280x720 for the 6.3 in model and 960x540 for the 5.8 incher). Beyond that, they have last generation processors and only 75% of the RAM of current flagships.
I still prefer an LTE iPad mini. No way I'm bleeding the money for a voice plan I'd never use with that "Mega" behemoth. (Or the Note for that matter..)
Samsung is just currently milking it for all it's worth
Uh, YEAH. When my clients are clamouring for a particular product, I try to provide it for them. In exchange, they provide me money.

How is it "respect" to tell me that I'm not capable of making good decisions and should leave it up to the manufacturer to decide for me what constitutes the "best" size? How is it disrespectful to respond to customers' express wishes with products that satisfy them?
If you don't like big phones, that's cool, don't buy them, but let's not spin this into something it isn't. I continue to use an iPhone because I prefer iOS to the alternative(s), but I sure don't feel "respected" when Apple (or anyone else, for that matter) tells me my preferences are silly.

Problem is that pesky two year contract. It'll cost more in the long run than a $ 460(?) mini with 3G.
What sort of f***ing retard is gonna want let alone buy one of these as a phone. This must be for midgets who want a tablet.
God help anyone I meet who has one of these, they are going to get taunted continuously for their choice of phone of which its size is inversely proportional to their IQ.
WTF? Why on Earth would you care what kind of phone someone else uses? Seriously dude, you have an awfully high opinion of your own opinion. Do you "taunt" people who whose cars are a different color than yours? Or perhaps more closely related, buy a truck instead of a car? If it's not what YOU prefer the buyer is stupid? Wow.
Agreed. Some of the bigger dudes at my gym will probably love these phones, I don't see most people finding these nearly as usable as a 5" or smaller phone.
Even the hand size of "bigger dudes" falls within a standard biological range. One that a 5" phone easily accomodates with its massive size. 6.3" is absolutely insane. But hey, I can see why they'd do it- why not? Samsung's startegy is to whore out as many models as possible and spam the market with models for sales, cause they give you "options". These situations always make me think back to SJs quote about how he's prouder about things that were NOT released, and thats what makes the company special. Samsung has no such product discipline.
Comments
My sentiments exactly.

You forgot one, the most critical one.

Anyway, I am sure there are a few out there who have never seen Dom Joly. How accurate his predictions were 10 years ago

I will stick to my 5 inches max. Fits easily in pocket, easy to use with one hand.
6 inches is too big for your jeans?

As discussed in another thread, bluetooth is your friend in those situations. Most cars are already wired for hands free.
