The stock is plummeting. But this is not the flagship iPhone anyways. The lines on Friday will negate this. Hopefully.
It appears to me that Wall Street suffers from cognitive dissonance when it comes to Apple. They wanted a cheap iPhone, but if they actually got a cheap iPhone they would instantly switch gears to fears about declining margins. You can't have cheap AND margins at the same time but Wall Street thinks Apple should. Market share is the be-all end-all requirement but when profit falls alarm bells go off. Apple makes the majority of the profit in mobile market but that doesn't count apparently. This two-faced approach by Wall Street almost guarantees AAPL will suffer no matter what Apple does, sells, or profits.
And as Apple fans why do we care about the stock price or market share anyway? I'll tell you why. Because the iHaters use these metrics to "prove" Apple is doomed and we react to that nonsense. We have so much emotional investment in Apple that we can't stand to hear the naysayers taunting us.
iPhones and androids are like comparing apples and oranges. BMW vs GMC. You either like one or the other.
for geeks yes but not the general public. I know many people who have moved from one platform to the other. I don't think platform loyalty between iOS and Android is anywhere near as strong as OSX and Windows.
I'm sure 5C will sell well for $99/month. Only other new phone on AT&T at that price is the HTC Mini, and who would buy that with its ridiculously small screen?
I find the pre-order situation odd. People know what they are getting with the 5s as it looks the same as the older 5, if they are sold on the new technology inside then the decision is made and so they would be happy to pre-order.
For the 5c I would have thought most people would want to wait and see them in the flesh before purchasing. How nice is the plastic, is it comfortable to hold, how bright are those colours etc? I think the 5c will sell, but it will be a slow start until people get exposure to them.
Makes a lot of sense. Maybe they should have pre-sold the S and held off on the C.
It is odd that those numbers haven't come out yet though considering that it's become common practice and expected. Certainly, they know it would affect their stock and anyone who says they don't care about that is kidding themselves.
I agree with what you say though about the C having a slow start. Only time will tell how it sells.
Agreed. I am planning to by both 5C and 5S. However, for 5c I would like to see it first before I commit to it. For 5S am willing to buy it without looking at it.

Yes you can. The Mac mini has good margins which is cheap compared to an iMac. A MacBook was cheap compared to a MBP. The iPod nanos have always had good margins.
Wall Street wasn't looking for a cheap iPhone with low margins. They were looking for a iPhone which would be competitive in the mid-tier smartphone market, providing Apple with growth by entering a new segment.
I suspect (as others have) that temporary supply constraints prevented a 5S preorder. 5C preorders are probably doing just fine, but Apple doesn't want to announce numbers simply because it won't tell the full story in absence of the 5S.
If they're willing to take this kind of speculative hit by not announcing numbers, it would seem as though the truth would earn an even deeper hit. Sad.

All will be revealed in due time.
And yet, you can reserve a 5S days in advance for the China launch, so it would seem they feel there's enough stock there, just not the rest of the world.
What's their problem? They don't know how much they are going to sell until the actual release date gets closer.
Apple will probably, just like they've done in the past, announce how many they've shipped or sold in the first weekend after they actually ship the product.

That needs to change.

Apple is making money hand over fist.

I wasn't expecting any announcement, since the 5s is not in the mix yet.
I'm also not surprised that "wall street" would react like this, so I'm not holding any AAPL at the moment.
I don't need to. This is simply a Target iPhone.
The 5s is the real deal.

My guess is that Apple will profit billions and billions and billions of dollars over the next year...
Sell! Sell! Sell!

Maybe a subtle bit of market manipulation on Apples part in order to buy back shares cheaply.

I want to see the phones in person before I purchase them.
