Because they have nothing to say? Or maybe they need to "simply" announce another astounding feat of engineering that no investor or commentator, from his/her highly technical background standpoint, doesn't even understand? When the iPhone 5S was announced, everybody said it was not a revolution, the same old evolution, blah blah blah... (not even mentioning the 5C). The 5S has a battery that is half the size of the Galaxy 5 providing same or even better performance (and battery time) and nobody even noticed that...(especially the investor community).
Probably if Apple sent the invite with no additional phrase it would have done a better job. But maybe this hype about it, is exactly what their MarCom departed wanted to achieve.
This makes me think there's a big upgrade to Siri as well - being able to say more to the phone that it can do. "Let's talk iPhone" introduced Siri, remember.
The odd shadowing also means something - those who think "it's just an invitation" don't know anything about Apple and its culture. (the sundial guess makes some sense)
Edit: although, it could just be telling you what time to be there (check the "Let's talk iPhone" and it gives the date, time and location in the message)
Still doesn't explain why Flint which is larger than any venue they've used outside of WWDC (and macworld). You don't need to invite 2,400 media and construct a large building if all you're announcing is a new phone with bigger screen.
Who says? This is Apple. Oh, and the 30th anniversary of being there.

Look I'm not trying to overhype anything but why are some being such wet blankets. Eddy Cue doesn't say it's the best product pipeline in 25 years if all it is is an iPhone with a bigger screen. Eventually we are going to get brand new stuff from Apple. Re/code outed the 9.9 date and they also claimed Apple's wearable would be announced on this date. I think I'll trust them over anyone here.
It would make sense we see new Apple TVs being that in the last few months or year or so, it has received a lot more channels in a short time frame. Also, Tim stated back in February that it was no longer a "hobby".
Makes me wonder if Apple hasn't leaked stuff to certain favorites early so they can have reviews up right away.
Whoa!
This could Mean many things form a revolutionary Product started by Steve ... To Apple becoming an MVNO or carrier/cableco ... to the Bank of Apple --- / CC Services / saving / banking / financing / buying / selling / -- all available through the iTunes store.
Nah! It's CarPlay in an Apple-branded electronic vehicle ...
I'll be looking to trade in my classic 1980 BjornBorg 6 ...
Hanging on to the 1976 PattiMcGuire 36D, tho ...
Now ya done it! You just had to bring up Patti... who I had the nastiest of crushes on in my youth... and I do mean nasty! And being a huge Bjorn Borg fan to boot, you can imagine my hatred for Jimmy Connors!

Because it’s right to be.
Eddy Cue doesn't say it's the best product pipeline in 25 years if all it is is an iPhone with a bigger screen.
Sure he does. It’s called marketing. It’s the best pipeline in 25 years because it’s the fastest hardware and most advanced software in 25 years. 10 years ago, that hardware was the best hardware in 15 years.

I want to see some surprises come Sept 9 also. Apple needs to blow me away with something amazing.
Technically, Apple doesn't need to blow you away... their successful is not reliant on you or me, it's reliant on the masses and hopefully bringing in new customers. I'm all in for the iPhone 6!! And curious what the 'iWatch' will offer, if they announce it.

Yeah ... Wasn't she something ... I still remember that picture of her sitting on the edge of that chair at the [kitchen?] table ... vividly!
But I watched every Jimmy Conners match I could -- waiting, breathlessly, for the crowd shots.
Looking at the drawing on the announcement... I for one certainly don't like that LENS-shaped object hovering above the apple, who's shadow indicates that it PROTRUDES.

You mean that lens-shaped leaf from the Apple logo? That one?

It sounds like he's reading too much into how rarely they've used the event place:
The Mac launch was a huge event, the iMac probably too but not the iMac SE event:

Skip to 26:50 to see how amazingly thin laptops used to be. Tim Cook has alluded to a new product category but said at one point that most people would consider it a new category, which suggests some people wouldn't:
He mentions about payments there among other things and how people still carry wallets around so mobile payments haven't been figured out yet. That doesn't seem like a new product category though.

"Wish we could say more"

3 story structure being put up. Assuming its a demo area?
It's a holding area for the angels and unicorns. It's gonna be...snif...magical!
Well, ya know, Apple saw what happens when you build mystery barges as demo areas, and so they decided to scale it down a bit.
Who says? This is Apple. Oh, and the 30th anniversary of being there.
Btw, Jim Dalrymple tweeted this today:
Makes me wonder if Apple hasn't leaked stuff to certain favorites early so they can have reviews up right away.
Seems like a good guess, to me!
E -- Hot Air Balloon rides
F - Pony rides.
Gotta love it. With just a few simple words Apple is generating a huge amount of hype.

Why? What evidence do they have that we don’t?

Flint is a beautiful venue -- less than a mile from Apple HQ.
Among others, we saw, the Duquesne Tamburitzans (Lucy was Croatian), Segovia, and the 1984 Mac Intro at Flint.
I like the idea of returning to the valley for major Apple announcements.
Saw Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne at Flint Center 2-3 years ago. This year's event is obviously going to be a doozy.
