This really is annoying that they forced this album into my Purchased list. I never purchased it. I was told that it's impossible to delete it. You have to hide it, but it's always there. I downloaded it and tried to listen to it, but it's terrible.
I don't like the idea of Apple putting stuff in my purchased folder. It isn't purchased at all. It's a free spam album. If they are going to do this in the future, I would like the option of opting out. I will go ballistic if they force Lady Gaga or Kanye West or other crap music in my Purchased list. U2 used to be great. I wasn't offended at first, but I see why the album is free. They knew it wasn't going to sell because it's not good!
I have my "automatic downloads" feature turned on and it worked exactly as I expected it to … downloading any purchased music immediately. The U2 album was given to me for free (as purchased), so no surprise or discontent here.
Is AI trolling it's own readership now? We know that all iTunes subscribers got the album ( which I thought a bit weak). We know that when you buy an album and you have auto- downloads on it downloads new owned content. We know that when you own music in icloud it appears in the music app with the cloud symbol if not downloaded. With no cloud symbol if downloaded.
Jesus what's the crisis? Let's say they had gifted everybody a movie. It auto downloaded for some and appeared in the videos app for others with a cloud symbol. Isn't that how it works?
They could have just put it on iTunes as a free album, that is, the purchase button says "Free" but until you click it, you don't get it. And a nice big ad front and centre so everyone knows. Making everyone automatically purchase it is going a bit far.
What some people here are missing is - people are not complaining of a free album, but the difficulty of removing something they don't want from their device. For some reason, Apple doesn't have the 'feature' to allow us to simply delete a particular song from an iDevice (directly). I remember having an iPhone 4 with 16GB of memory. I had a hard time controlling the memory usage. Once when I downloaded a free video song promoted with the 12 days of Christmas app. However, I didn't like it. But I had a hard time trying to remove it. Eventually I did but it took me over an hour to figure it out! Now I know how to do it, but it's certainly not straight forward (unless I'm mistaken and iOS 7 has implemented the ability). So people may complain when the U2 album is automatically downloaded, and of course taking up space, and later decide they don't want some or all of the songs. Then they find it's difficult to remove them. It can be especially frustrating if they don't have much free memory on their iPhone/iPad.

Difficulty? Just take your weak, little, spindly finger and then using all your might, try try try... huffing and puffing as you slightly flick to the left.
Once you've managed that impossible feat, make an appointment at the Apple Store, lay your head across the Genius Bar and kindly ask an Apple employee to bash it with a hammer. Presto, album all gone! :smokey:

Thank you! Actually, I didn't realise that. Pretty sure I tried that before but it didn't work. Nothing happened when I swiped to the left. Has it always been like that? Even in iOS 5 and 6? My iPhone 4 came with iOS 5 and I was talking about my experience with my iPhone 4. So the only way I could figure out how to remove a song was to use iTunes and deselect it from syncing, and obviously I had to use my computer to do that. Anyway I'm glad that I can delete songs now. I just tried it and it worked. So I'm glad for your rude reply! But maybe you were joking! Haha! Anyway, your comment was useful!!???? Thanks. So, then, if people are complaining about the auto downloads and people can easily delete the songs, then the reason for complaining might be just the troublesome of having to delete something they didn't want in the first place. Partly understandable, but not so much really.

I agree that this would have been a cleaner implementation rather than showing it as already purchased. Perhaps this has something to do with the accounting model Apple is using to pay U2 for the right to give away a finite (but still huge) number of copies. If it was shown as "Free" it would represent a sizable but unquantifiable debt sitting on Apple's books.
In any case, this is a beautiful and well intentioned gesture by Apple to thank their iTunes customers. Stumbling a tiny bit on the delivery mechanism is entirely forgivable, unless you're a pathological douchebag or puppy kicker.
that's because coldplay are u2 without testicles I jest cos coldplay are ok if a bit drippy. I love u2 and love apple, but yeah the way they went about this wasn't right. They wanted to have a wizard of oz moment and show how clever and powerful they are and it kind of backfired a little.
What is scary is that this reads like a bad sci fi movie. If some evil mastermind hacks into apple's servers and decides to put hidden stuff on our devices that can hypnotise us into doing stupid things like spending €1000 on a phone and watch... ah wait.
I like the album.. no stand out songs that scream sing along single like vertigo or beautiful day but the rest of it is pretty solid. Not as experimental as some of us fans prefer but definitely not disappointed with it.

LOL!!!
I'll take it for mine.
Rock and Roll is officially dead. It is now just spam mail.
No good deed goes unpunished.

How do I delete a post? I used the AppleInsider App to 'quote' but it 'replied' instead? Seems I cannot delete a post.
Edit: I just checked the help page and apparently you can't. So just ignore this. Sorry.
Don't quote me on it, but I'm pretty sure this is the seventh sign of the apocalypse.

I never liked U2 and I don't like Apple telling me I like U2. Thanks for the crapware.
Now how do I delete the music? I know I can hide it but I want it out and off of my iTunes and iPhone?
I tried the slide to delete but it still leaves it on my phone.
Downloaded and listened to the album; too bad it's so unremarkable. Hope Apple didn't pay too much for it.
I'm not as much up on music as I once was,
but to me, it sounded like Coldplay...
with testicles.

Yes, maybe Apple were helping them but then again maybe it should have been a RED album. Why does U2 need the money anyway?
