that's because coldplay are u2 without testicles :D  I jest cos coldplay are ok if a bit drippy. I love u2 and love apple, but yeah the way they went about this wasn't right. They wanted to have a wizard of oz moment and show how clever and powerful they are and it kind of backfired a little.
What is scary is that this reads like a bad sci fi movie. If some evil mastermind hacks into apple's servers and decides to put hidden stuff on our devices that can hypnotise us into doing stupid things like spending €1000 on a phone and watch... ah wait.

I like the album.. no stand out songs that scream sing along single like vertigo or beautiful day but the rest of it is pretty solid. Not as experimental as some of us fans prefer but definitely not disappointed with it.

Bono may have testicles but he sure can't remember his lines. OMG what an embarrassing few minutes that was. Poor Tim trying to work around Bono's line flubbing was excruciating to watch (no pun intended).

Apple, STOP it. We do not want that garbage, not even from free! BTW, how much did you pay for it? Lost money!

This really is annoying that they forced this album into my Purchased list. I never purchased it. I was told that it's impossible to delete it. You have to hide it, but it's always there. I downloaded it and tried to listen to it, but it's terrible.

I don't like the idea of Apple putting stuff in my purchased folder. It isn't purchased at all. It's a free spam album. If they are going to do this in the future, I would like the option of opting out. I will go ballistic if they force Lady Gaga or Kanye West or other crap music in my Purchased list. U2 used to be great. I wasn't offended at first, but I see why the album is free. They knew it wasn't going to sell because it's not good!

You would rather have an "Apple installed albums that weren't going to sell well" folder?

What if it was an album that you did want?
    Would it still bother you?

    What's this?
    A complementary pillow mint?
I don't want this installed on my pillow.
It's just crappy branded candy that would never sell well.
Now everyone is going to think I like pillow mints.
I would go ballistic if they put hard candy or chewing gum on my pillow.
The guy who owns the pillow mint factory is all washed up.
    Rabble rabble rabble!

The point is I don't want anything in my purchased list that I didn't purchase. You can't delete it from the purchased list either. You can only hide it. More and more people are going to stop using iTunes if they start spamming music we don't want into our list.

As part of its free promotional offer of U2's "Songs of Innocence" LP, it appears Apple is flagging the content as owned for all iTunes accounts, meaning iOS device users who have automatic downloads enabled will get the entire album pushed to their device without prior approval.
Except users have already given prior approval.
They did so by enabling Automatic downloads.
And if they don't want downloads over cell data, just turn it off.

Well, this thread is not alone. The Apple Discussion forums have a couple of threads like this one too. Incessant bitching about a free gift from Apple. As is the usual case though, I suspect the complainers here and on Apple’s forums are the tiny minority of douches who complain that the sun came up this morning. The vast, vast majority of some 500,000,000 iTunes subscribers are either appreciative or blissfully unaware. Tim Cook and Apple were very proud of their announced products and wanted to show their appreciation to customers. What did they get? A backhanded slap in the face from a few ornery personality types. I bet they would do a “Ray Rice” to their Oncologist too, after she told them they were cured.

On the other side of the fence we have the pea brains who can’t figure out how to download the free gift. They’re bitching at Apple because the album DIDN’T show up in their libraries and demand someone to take them, step-by-step, through the intuitive process.

I don’t know which group is worse, the douche bags or the dummies.

Oh yeah the whole thing was pretty awful. He's ok when he's alone giving a speech or adlibbing but in a rehearsed context... he tends to be a bit shit. Plus I think he was analysing his performance which wasn't their best but was an ok one considering it was the first time they played new material live. Also apple had their share of probs especially with the it will appear in users' libraries in 5 seconds. There were many hiccoughs on the night but between the new products and new album I was a happy bunny.

They should have let Larry deal with the talking.

Oh, the absolute horror. People have no problem uploading every shred of info about themselves to Google or Facebook who rape any semblance of privacy, but are "oh so offended" when a free album shows up on their device. God forbid.

40-50 MB of a limited data plan wasted on an album you either didn't want or could download at home?  Yeah, I can see where some people would be upset.

Again, this would have been really cool in 1987.

Listening to music on a VAX you mean. Because everything about what happened would amaze the 1980's. Even Bono not bring grey yet.

An album is only 50 megabytes? I doubt that.

I can't figure out how to get it. When I look at the album in iTunes, the button is grayed out and says "Purchased". But the album is not in my iTunes library, nor on my phone. Not sure what's going on.

If it was shown as "Free" it would represent a sizable but unquantifiable debt sitting on Apple's books.

So make it free for two weeks. Those who want it will get it. Those who don't won't.

I agree that the album being marked as "purchased" automatically has drawbacks. I'm surprised no one at Apple thought through "what if some people don't want this album?".

Here, have a cookie; it's free. Oops. Did I not mention it has peanuts in it? So sorry about your nut allergy. Get well soon.

The album is not "free". It consumes bandwidth and storage space that the user pays for. In the big picture, it's a very minor annoyance; but it is a legitimate annoyance. A bit of negative feedback should help Apple rethink this in the future.

It took me a while to figure it out, too. Look under "Playlists"; it's in there. Makes no sense to me why you can't download it when looking at the album in the iTunes store.

Where exactly under Playlists? I don't have a playlist called "U2" or "Songs of Innocence". Nothing under "Purchased Music" either. I've searched my library for both, in addition to the title of some of the songs in the album.....nothing. :\

No, I mean a free U2 album showing up on my favorite music playing device.
