It's advertised as 18K gold meaning it has to be be 18/24 (or 75%) pure gold.

[I think that's about $1,500 worth of gold in the big watch.]

Most $17,000 watches on the market are decades outdated.

But they work just as well as they did decades ago.

The difference is that a 2015 Lamborghini will still be cruising around the neighborhood as a status symbol 30 years from now. That ?Watch won't be supported by Apple after 5 years, and won't work with anything other than other obsolete technology no longer supported by Apple. So it's a DISPOSABLE status symbol (nothing wrong with that I suppose), unlike a Rolex, or a Lamborghini, or a 1965 Mustang, or a 1993 BMW 325i, all of which will continue to do what they were originally designed and sold to do for decades to come.

So this is like the Black MacBook then? A premium for premium's sake?

The basic watch itself costs $349 less the aluminum case and rubber sport band. The gold costs $1500. So the remains $10K is for the privilege of having a watch made out of Gold?

People buy $30k Gold Rolex watches that have technology that has been OUTDATED for DECADES!

And that $30k Gold Rolex will still be running for decades.

Here's a question ... What does having no mid-priced gold-tone watch do for those who only wear gold jewelry and watches? Since most can't afford a $10,000 watch, there's no option for gold-tone. Will these people who have a gold iPhone, gold iPad, and gold MacBook, really settle for a silver watch? The one Apple product that they will need to match the rest of their jewelry?

Will this affect Apple's early adopters? Given that Apple is marketing the ?Watch as a fashion item, won't this limitation affect fashion buyers?

At $10K+ a pop Apple isn't expectng many people to buy the Ediition. So I find all these discussions around who will buy it, won't the tech be outdated in a year blah blah blah to be Zzzzz. As an investor the concern should be how many stainless steel watches Apple can move.

Most likely a lot of SS watches. A lot being relative to the watch industry as it is today.

Well for the price, they could go and buy 9-15 oz of the stuff, which would be a better investment.

They could also have bought stocks of Apple in 2002 instead of an Ipod and used the money from that to buy the Edition watch with the proceeds. Or buy some now...

Gold isn't that great and investment ;-).

have you ever bought a gold watch?   Ever?  If you are not the target audience, DON'T BUY IT.  Gold watches are a thing, whether you relate or not.

The comment on the black mackbook is odd.  You mean the new space black one?

It's 18K, which by definition means 75% gold, not "almost half".

It used to before Apple figured out how to use cermaic particles instead of other metals as traditionally used.  The 'Apple gold' is far less then 75% gold by volume and will be the first mass use of this new kind of gold.  The Apple watch casing will contain about HALF the amount of gold that a traditional mix would contain for the same size watch casing.  This is such an unusual use of gold that it is actually being called 'Appple gold' by many in the industry.
