KGI: Force Touch won't be enough to drive 'iPhone 6s' upgrades, could mean negative iPhone growth

Apple may not be able to convince many users to upgrade to its next-generation iPhone if Force Touch is the only major addition, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes, which could lead to the first ever year-over-year contraction in iPhone sales.

Ming-Chi Kuo is so out of touch (or insensitive) that he doesn't know when to clap to the Radetzky March ...

    Lol

iPhones don't need growth drivers. They just need to get incrementally better at what they do.

And force touch is s pretty neat thing. So it IS a growth driver.
People will upgrade according to true upgrade cycle. My gf is one of them. The 5s is just about done. 6 s is going to feel like a whole new world

Until Apple comes up with something substantial...that of which I haven't an idea, well, maybe BETTER, LESS CONVOLUTED file management to start. Yes, I am well aware that a bunch of you are gonna chime in saying that file management is just peachy, but it ISN'T...for instance, one CANNOT even bulk delete photos...WTF...one has to select individually each and every photo that one wishes to delete...total crap.

Incremental, pitifully meaningless generations of product with VERY little obvious enhamcments are played out and the joke is over.

Maybe the el-cheapo smartphones have a growing base of users because of this: Why upgrade to the " Latest & Greatest" or "Our best iDevice' yet" pitch every half a year when one can get a shitty phone that does what is needed and if you lose it, break it, or want to switch it out for another model, it doesn't break you?

Hey gals and guys...contrary to what I write and it coming across as harsh, I am just fed up with Apple not giving people what they want...expanded & practical i/o, file management & user accesability that makes sense to name my main contentions...and don't all of you say this isn't an issue...plenty of peolple outside of these AI forum beg to differ, people that don't have a holier-than-thou, stock holder, in-the-know complex

Everyone has an opinion, and yours seems to be that you think Apple should make the iPhone more like a "mobile PC".  With similar/related file management, USB ports, perhaps ability to write on programs for it, etc.  Hey, that is what you want, so no one can fault that opinion.

However, if you believe that is what "most" consumers want (or even more than a fraction), I think history is showing that isn't true.  iPhone has very high customer satisfaction ratings as is, it is growing its base each year, and increasing its ASP.  Certainly the majority of people I know just use the devices, and really don't know much about the underlying technology.  Most people "use" a PC application - they don't tinker with it.

On the allure of "el cheap" devices, we again have history to show that in the consumer space, a large number "do care" what they have, does it look nice, does it take good pictures, etc.  And we are seeing a bit more regarding the security problems of those el cheapo devices that are never updated.

The good news for you is that Apple isn't the only game in down, and with something like an estimated 54,000 Android models on the market, surely one will interest you & your needs.

I also believe in the US now that three out of the four major carriers will no longer offer two year contracts the update cycle for the consumer will change. Many just upgrade because their contract allow them to upgrade after two years.

Even on this forum we have users with iPhone 4,4s because the iPhone and iPad are more than fast enough to run just about any application anyone wants to run without any lag. People argue that 1gb of ram is more than enough now somehow a faster processor and more ram is going to be a selling point? That's unlikely.

The death of two year contracts is going to create longer upgrade cycles. The upgrade cycle has changed for the iPad simply because it's more than fast enough for the majority of users, it's logical the same is going to happen with the iPhone.

No doubt the changes in the US will affect the frequency of some upgraders, but of course this applies not just to Apple but to all mobile handset vendors.  The figure I recall reading recently (think it was from Apple on an earnings call) was that something like 75% of all iPhones are sold without a carrier subsidy (though they might be financed separately) today.  So the market, at least globally is already well on this path, and the wheels haven't come off the Apple bus yet.

Sure, the overall upgrade cycle of phones is likely to lengthen as the market matures, as we saw with PC's, and are seeing with tablets.  Switchers then become more important.  Who will do better in that game?  The company with the best brand, customer satisfaction, quality, device longevity, s/w upgrade longevity, ecosystem, etc.  Or companies that ship their phones and rarely upgrade them, with an OS that is becoming known for more security holes and difficulties in getting updates.

You can always jailbreak it. The restrictions are for the protection of the typical user. That is the whole idea behind the walled garden. The security is built in so you don't have to think about it. And by the way you can delete photos in bulk. At the top right is a Select button. Choose the photos to delete and tap the trash can.

That is exactly what "bulk" is not. You have to select each photograph individually.

There is no practical ways to delete entire albums off the iPhone (without using a computer).
