"Hey Siri" & iOS 9 has added to the fairly dumb bluetooth set up my Ford came with, now I don't have to push the paddle on the steering wheel to activate however there are a few issues with background noise especially when people are talking on the radio.
Using the steering wheel paddle mutes it.
I find I can do anything I need to without taking my eyes off the road, which is all that is important.
iOS 9 fixed maps for me on Carplay with my Pioneer AVH4000NEX, as with iOS 8.x, it was like there was a blue fog/clouds over the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the screen, so you couldn't see any turn on the route before you had to [and sometimes the audio for distance to turn would be ambiguous for me as to which specific road to turn at]. It wasn't a hard cutoff [like the map area just didn't expand further up], but what looked like the map, overlaid with a light blue cloud, solid blue at the top, then over about 10-20% vertically, go transparent. Rebooting the phone also didn't help [and the Pioneer powers up with the truck each time you start it].
Now, with iOS 9 on Carplay, it uses the whole screen finally. And the details on the map also look better than under iOS 8.
Wow. Can't wait until police/insurance companies catch on this. google will be an excellent source of information about accidents...
I wonder if Google inform their users that they are receiving this specific information whenever they have their phones connected in their cars? Not a vague "we collect some information from your vehicle", but exactly what they are tracking in exchange for just permitting you to connect your phone to your car.
Do a search for "Vehicle Black Box" and you will see that car manufacturers have been installing them since at least 1994 and they are built in to more than 90% of cars according to this article from a couple years ago:
So if you get into an accident (please don't) don't worry about Google recording your speed, acceleration, whether you hit the brakes, if you were wearing your seat belt, etc. Your car is already recording all of that information and more.
They even have sensors in the seats to tell if a passenger was sitting there at the time of the accident. I believe those are the same sensors that turn off the passenger airbag if something on the seat is too light, like a child seat.
Given that the Piech/Porsche family is now taking over control of Volkswagen (parent company) it will be interesting to see if all of Volkswagen and its subsidiaries adopt CarPlay exclusively?
I think you have touched on something important. I wonder if VW's serious troubles with software related emissions testing scandal had anything to do with not wanting Google to poke around in their car diagnostics.
WTF Google. WFT. Why the hell does Google need to know your speed, throttle position, coolant, oil temp........
But Google fans will still say but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, its all for the good of the customer.
Only a stab in the dark, maybe it is so they can display that information on the dashboard screen. Or your phone.
Then again maybe big bad Google is PURE EVIL and wants to track your every move so they can sell YOU and your first born to the highest bidder!
I'm thinking its the former, but no doubt many folks will think its the latter.
Most brand new cars I have driven and rode in do most of this already in some fashion. It is often saved and recorded and your local car dealer or mechanic will be able to access it. I'm sure they do that sort of tracking for your own good, and not because they want to screw you over because you void your warranty by not getting your oil changed in a timely manner.
Some vehicles have more info about the vehicle available than others. It is sometimes a clunky interface and distracting if accessed while driving. I have no doubt that Apple or Google could come up with a slick interface to check your current MPG, tire pressure, oil stats, etc. that would rival the best that car companies have to offer.
Can you imagine how much $$$ Google can sell this information for? Selling this data to car insurance companies and law enforcement.
Google is the scum of the earth.
Google doesn't sell information of that sort do they? With that said companies like Progressive with Snapshot and others with ODB readers like Liberty Mutual and USAA may since they collect the same stats from your car and perhaps more. I've no idea how much the insurance industry shares among themselves.
The police and lawyers? In the event of a serious accident they already have access to that information if they want since your car is recording it. No need to buy it from anyone.

Google is the scum of the earth.
And yet, not one single person in any car forum about this new car cared enough to even comment about Apple’s CarPlay or Android Auto. They cared about the more important things that actually have more relevance to driving the car.
Cars today already record all this information and most insurance companies have sticks to install to get the information as well. Insurance companies have access to this information and the police can get it easily if they want.

Of course, it's not just that data, it's the fact that that their data shows " hey, look! cornchip likes to drive his _insert fine German sports car here_ like a wild man, and he's married to crunchy_grl83 and they always buy organic corn chips!" Might be time for an oil change at the Valvoline right next to the grocery store he frequents the most! Oh hey there's a sale on organic corn chips!
Have you updated the firmware in your AVH4000NEX? I have not had the experience you are describing. And I love my CarPlay. Much better than the Sync in my wife's 2015 Explorer.

Can't be many people who can afford a Porsche that own an Android phone. Google should be targeting Lada/Skoda instead.

Forget CarPlay and Android Auto
Can pretty much end the sentence there.
I wonder if this will be a trend?
Forget CarPlay and Android Auto, i'm waiting for Microsoft's version of a car info system.
They have Microsoft Blue&Me.

Edited for typos and clarity.

That's really strange. Usually it's Apple making all kinds of demands of its partners.
Not when it comes to privacy. Other things - yes. But not privacy.
OMG. I was not aware that all vehicle stats went to Google for Android Auto. Unbelievable!!!
All car makers should drop this POS or risk losing customers.

Exactly why I am loyal to Apple. They understand that my privacy is a priceless commodity that will reward them with my business if they protect it.

Oh... Right... True... I'm sure that was Google's first thought... What was I smoking...
