I thought of a camera as soon as I heard about the iPod. However... you people are crazy.
I got a nearly top of the line 4MP camera at Christmas, and it was over $600 US.
Apple's freaking MP3 player costs 400... a 4MP cam w/ a 5GB HDD would cost over a thousand US$ from Apple. Count on it.
FWIW, a 5GB drive would hold apx. 2340 4MP pictures at lowest compression according to my quick calculations. I say don't even compress those bad boys, and get 1500 pictures in your pocket!
Anyone who thinks this is $500 is just setting themselves up to post in the "I Hate Apple's Stupid High Prices" thread if this camera is ever released.
Digital video camera from apple with quicktime 6 for video compression MPEG4.
Quicktime 6 is the key element for a device (Videos and Photos). 5GB for video in MPEG4 format would be enough I think. How much time could be stored in a 5GB HD? 3 hours?
<strong>I've gotta agree with what everyone is basically saying...an iPod wouldn;t be an iPod with an optical drive in it...it would have ot be as big as a portable CD player so I really see absolutely no point in that.</strong><hr></blockquote>
They do make small CDR/W drives that use small disks. Sony uses one in
the digital ipod like camera sounds great! I would love a ipod sized 5 or 10GB 4MP Camera that grabs 3-5 min MPEG-4 clips. The could start to combine iPhoto and iMovie and iDVD into one package!
An iPod-esque digital camera would be phenomenal - although with 5Gigs, yeah - it'll be expensive!
An iPod with a CDRW?! Forget it - and those little disks won't be any better. Firstly, they can't be read on anything slot loading (yeah, I know this was a gimmick, but a lot of people still own them, the new TiBooks still have them). Secondly, don't even bring this up with the RIAA!
One thing it'd need to be though, in contrast to the iPod is more scratch resistant...I love my iPod, but I'm scared to death of getting the face/screen scratched to hell. My Canon S100 does an awesome job of being a very durable small package and a kickass camera. Add to that a massive HD and firewire and I'd trade my old one in in a heartbeat!

Of course you must understand that this may be in development for some time, as Motorola is busy working on the G5
<strong>It's not all about megapixels though. You can't get a decent 4 megapixel camera without spending $700 right now, and that's below MSRP.</strong><hr></blockquote>
I guess it depends on what you mean by 'decent'. Here's one:
----
Kodak this past weekend introduced the DX4900 Zoom, the latest addition to its line of EasyShare digital cameras. The DX4900 is a 4-megapixel camera that features a 2x optical zoom, 3x digital zoom, 16MB CompactFlash card, and will ship in March for US$399. Like other EasyShare cameras, the DX4900 is compatible with the EasyShare Camera Dock ($79), which provides one-touch image transfer and battery recharging capabilities.

Add about $100 to $200 for Apple styling + 5GB of storage and we've got a winner!
So this loser reads <a href="http://www.dpreview.com" target="_blank">www.dpreview.com</a> as well as old (BS) posts from this and other forums.
That almost made me die laughing when I read it. Foveon X3. You realize that is a new sensor arrangement currently only available on an announced $3000.00 US digital SLR camera. You won't see it in a $1000 pro-sumer camera if at least a year doesn't go by first. You can forget about anything in the 400-600 dollar range.
Man those guys suck ass. I could invent better rumors in my sleep.
Matsu, don't be so quick to assume Foveon's X3 won't be on a prosumer camera any time soon. Kodak and MS have announced partnerships with Foveon, and Olympus still hasn't made any major announcements since PMA 2002 kicked off.
I'm waiting until all the manufacturers have released new cameras before I buy, and I think there's a good chance that a prosumer camera with a Foveon X3 CMOS will appear by the end of summer.
I had an Apple Quicktake 150. It was basically an upgraded QuickTake 100. They made up to the QuickTake 200 and stopped. It was one of the first digital cameras. It connected through the serial port. Ah memories.
I had a QuickTake 100 and a 200. I still have the 200 if anyone is interested in buying it, though I don't know why you would.
I also still have all my old pics from both cameras saved to my harddrive. Its funny to look at the Quicktake pics and compare them to my 2.1 megapixel Kodak pics
<strong>I'd take a Foveon X3 equipped Sigma SD9 over a FujiFilm S2 Pro for example...even though the SD9 is only a 3.5 megapixel camera and the Fuji is a 6.1 megapixel camera.
The Foveon CMOS is amazing.</strong><hr></blockquote>
mmmmm, Foveon!
If they ever get around to going public, I've got 10k w/ their name on it.
I'm not so sure it's going to be that much better. I bet a 6MP bayer pattern sensor in a pro Digital-SLR more than compares with the Foveon. All this stuff about capturing more of the light. Doesn't the light have to pass through the each subsequent layer in the sensor? Wouldn't that at least partially obscure the light gathered by the lower layers? I don't buy it. It's still 3 color information, just that now the pixels are stacked one over the other instead of beside each other, so I don't see how the stuff about it requiring less processing can be true: A DSP of some kind is still gonna have to figure out 8-14 bits of precision for each of R, G, and B.

If the 14.1" got G4 and 1280x1024 or 1400x1080 screen I'd pick one up right away! Could a superdrive fit in it as well?
There is a camera due out in May from Sigma that uses the Foveon X3 chip. Take a look here <a href="http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/0-1429209.html?tag=dir" target="_blank">http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/0-1429209.html?tag=dir</a> (bottom of page)

I'll see your "Foveon X3 chip", and raise you Motorola's.

Also, I would rather have a camera that is more mainstream and parts can be bought for it easily.
more info there on the device.

This is wrong. Apple made one of the first consumer digital cameras called the quicktake or something related to quicktime. It was fine for its time.
Right now the PMA show is on in Orlando Florida with lots of announcements of new cameras (even a Leica digital camera).

P.S. Foveon chip will be in a Kodak pro camera.
