SGI may be the next to go:
but to who?
The following article tells of MS leaving OpenGL. Could SGI be an Apple purchase in the future. Apple uses OpenGL, Maya, and could indeed use a Unix team that complements OSX with Tech support. This article does not state anything of a take over, but several months ago MS purchased some patents from SGI involved with OpenGL. I believe those assets were to de-solve an old partnership they had combining DirectX and OpenGL called Fahrenheit. Only time can tell. Apple has been wanting a 3D app. This may finally be the answer to Apple's 3D solutions.

But what do I know
M$ only purchased the patent on OpenGL 1.3 (not too sure about 1.4) or older.
The coming OpenGL 2.0 won't be affected.
Haha tell me to get a "real" computer then...
I know ILM was still using Softimage 3D on sgi for animation cuz its so damn good, but I heard they were making the switch to XSI. Avid really screwed up Soft with XSI after ironically microsoft helped to make Soft 3D so good (access to NT's core secrets), though from what I heard XSI is getting much better. I would seriously kill to be able to use Softimage on my mac, I never was a huge fan of Maya. But I think it would be bad for 1 company (Apple) to own both maya and softimage and then make one disappear. There would no competition. It might be better if they owned Maya cuz so many houses are using it, vs. with Softimage they would have to continue the process of building it back up to a great program again, and then get people to switch back from maya.
And yea Leonis is right. Hopefully there is a plan thats been in the works that will take effect with the 970

No matter whether Apple will acquire Alias|Wavefront or not. The fact is. We Canadians rock
XSI - Montréal
Maya - Toronto
But that's not Apple's style. Maybe they'll buy stuff if SGI is willing to sell off part?
Whither AutoStudio? Most Apple hardware was designed with it--as are many automobiles and other products. That won't be ported to OS X. Hope it doesn't get lost in some goofy Parametric or UG buyout if SGI does dissolve.
Picking up SGI would give Apple a clear avenue to go after the high end server market and allow a complete top to bottom sales effort for Audio/Video/Design market.
IBM could then buy Apple/SGI. They could then merge with Oracle (for database stuff), and Sun.
As for SGI, they might be willing to divest themselves of certain technologies, which Apple could cherry-pick. I don't really know if they'd want to swallow SGI whole, though. It would take them years to integrate, to the extent they ever would.
It's nice to see the old SGI buyout rumor back, though. It's been a while. Disney, anyone?

It would be like holding the Burning Man in downtown Tehran.

As far as I know it is cheaper to get stuff done in Canada. That is another reason why a lot of Hollywood productions are shot and post produced in Canada. I do like you Canadians though.
[quote] Yea why is it all the best 3d programs come from Canada

Yea I haven't used the newest XSI version yet either, but from what I heard about XSI in general from long time Soft 3D users is that they took away the foundation and brilliant intricacies of Soft 3D, and basically built 3d tools into a compositing application. But then again the new version could be like gold for all I know. I'll shut up now -
