The new iOS-exclusive iZotope Spire Studio connects to an iPhone through Wi-Fi to control a multi-track recorder, allowing for nearly any space to be used as a convenient recording studio.

The iZotope Spire Studio has a internal microphone, which according to the company is "studio-quality." A pair of XLR/TS combo jacks allow for instrument connection and power, providing 48V to connected devices as phantom power.

Wi-fi is 2.4GHz 802.11n. Sample rate and bit depth are 48 kHz and 24-bit, respectively. The company claims that the storage on the device is sufficient for six hours of recording time.

A LED touch-sensitive array on the Spire allows for on-device volume control, session start, and muting without resorting to the dedicated app for the device. File management is provided by the app.

The iOS app allows for recording level configuration, automatically syncs tracks between hardware and software, plus allows for exporting the recorded tracks to Pro Tools, iMovie, and Logic. Additionally, effects can be applied to the tracks stored on the Spire Studio through the iPhone or iPad.

Spire Studio will be available for $349 from the website for the Spire Studio, and at select retailers in the fall.

The 2.0 version of the free Spire app required to use the device mandates an iPhone 6 or newer, and iOS 10 or above. It requires link text79.1MB of storage on the device, with track retention on the iPhone growing that significantly over time.

Wow! I've been waiting for something like this. Just to be able to record a song/guitar and lay down a rhythm and base track, piano maybe another vocal. Pretty cool.

Garage Band is too limiting and Logic is too complex.

Plus no, cables for mic's, amps. really cool.

    Best.

    P.S. Hope it works w/ AirPods. :)

Does it allow external storage to be attached? That's the biggest limitation to multitrack recording with an iOS device ...

Storage is probably on the spire not the iPhone. (6hours worth or 45min with 8 tracks)

Hi Nathan - Storage is available both on the Spire device (4GB internal) and the iPhone through the app. Once your iPhone recognizes the connection with the Spire Studio, the contents are automatically loaded onto your iPhone. From there, the only limit is the capacity of the iPhone (or you can export the files to google drive, dropbox, etc...). You can also easily import files down from the cloud to the device as well if you need to add additional tracks.

It does access the storage on the iPhone itself and, by proxy, your icloud drive, google drive, etc... The device itself holds 4GB, but automatically syncs to the iPhone when connected. From there the device memory can be maintained, reused. Files can even be brought down from the cloud directly to the device in case you want to add additional tracks or mix further. Also, anything mixed quickly in Spire can be exported to a more full fledged DAW for more fun.
