Amazon seeks to widen its smart speaker lead with a new product intended for children's use, that comes pre-packed with parental controls, and access to some of Amazon's subscription services included in the purchase price.

New Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition

Amazon's product page for the new product says the new Kids Edition will allow young ones to use Alexa as "a kid-friendly DJ, comedian, and storyteller Alexa will play music, answer questions, read stories, tell jokes, and more -- all with younger ears in mind." It also comes with one free year of Amazon's FreeTime Unlimited and a two-year replacement guarantee.

FreeTime Unlimited content included with the device is available across multiple devices. With the 1-year subscription, FreeTime Unlimited offers access to over 13,000 kid-friendly books, educational apps, games, movies, and TV shows from Disney, Nickelodeon, PBS, Amazon Originals for Kids, and more. After one year, the subscription will automatically renews every month starting at $2.99 per month.

The parental controls include daily time limits and the ability to filter out explicit lyrics from Amazon Music, all manageable from an iPhone or Android app. A wireless intercom system is available through the "Drop in" feature, connecting the device to other Echo speakers in the home, or through an app.

The Echo Dot Kids Edition with blue, green, or red protective cases will arrive on May 9 but is available for preorder now with a single unit priced at $79.99 or a pair of them for $129.98.

Echo ecosystem vs. HomePod

The new edition represents the latest salvo in the battle between Amazon's Echo line and Apple's HomePod.

Apple has not released a family-specific version of the HomePod, nor is it likely to. However, the company has recently touted its parental management tools across various platforms.

The $349 HomePod remains significantly more expensive than any product on the Echo line.

Worse yet, people will actually buy this and think it is a good thing.
Because people want to do as little hands on parenting as possible.

Some guy on one of these threads was talking about how difficult it was to set limits with a three year old and instead, suggested that Apple do more with parental controls.

people will jump on this product and start filing lawsuits the second their child does something wrong. It’s inevitable.

I'm sure the "Virtual Parent" skill is not far behind...

A few years from now: Amazon introduces their new Amazon Echo plus for kids. “New additional features: educational conversation and psychological help. For any issue Amazon Echo has the tissue. And advice. Plus: automatic food dispensing through Amazon fridge control plus - never worry again about your kid eating the wrong things. Or wrong quantities. Added protection by always-on location monitoring. You know, to protect from harm. This is parenting of the future. Be among the first ones to embrace this and receive 10% off your next prime subscription: so you can enjoy more and longer.”

I'm waiting for the Pet Edition Echo that interprets animal noises as orders for Amazon pet products.

So... they throws in a subscription to Audibles (audiobooks) for kids?  That’s pretty cool...

Who says the parents can’t be there with them listening to Harry Potter (etc.) while going to sleep?

What exactly is wrong with an Echo that is designed with a parental filter built in?

Sometimes Apple fans are just nuts... If Apple offered the same thing they’d say “that’s amazing”.

These parental controls probably include a timer to turning off music, etc.

Which is what people have been asking for...

    .....
Now Amazon delivering packages inside your house or vehicle trunk... that’s creepy.

Mixed feeling on that...  physiologically laughter lifts moods.  Age appropriate jokes would be amusing...

    But, random laughter is creepy.

They changed that feature the same day it started trended. Instead of saying "Alexa laugh" and having her do that unfortunate cackle with no other info, you have to ask "Alexa, can you laugh?" and she replies with "Sure, I can laugh. tee hee."

It wasn't random. Alexa thought she heard the wake word followed by the word laugh so the service responded the way it was programmed. Now it's much harder to have that triggered, the response makes it clear that it was requested, and the laugh doesn't change and is the least non-threatening laugh possible.

I don't think anyone said that? Telling bedtime stories isn't the only thing it does either..hence the hands off parenting comments.

Amazon's product page for the new product says the new Kids Edition will allow young ones to use Alexa as "a kid-friendly DJ, comedian, and storyteller Alexa will play music, answer questions, read stories, tell jokes, and more -- all with younger ears in mind."

DVD and Blurays have been babysitters for years for some folks. You honestly think this product will somehow get some parents to be more hands on and engaged ?

I will agree sitting with the kids listening to a story is a cool idea... B)

Being able to interact with the device is surely better than just be a receiver of DVD/Blu-ray and TV shows. Kid shows will often speak to the camera and kids will respond, but they usually just say "good" or " did you say… ."

Obviously real people interacting with children is better, but I'd say that two-way communication is better than one-way communication, and it's not like DVD/Blu-ray and TV are going anywhere.
