Kwikset's Premis HomeKit-enabled door lock is now available in a new Contemporary finish after being shown off during CES earlier this year.

The Premis is a HomeKit-compatible smart lock that is widely distributed amongst home improvement stores. It features an external keypad that can be programmed with up to 30 unique codes, a comprehensive lock history to see who locked/unlocked the door when and how, and can be easily scheduled. Push notifications regarding the lock's status can also be sent to user devices.

Thanks to HomeKit support, it can be integrated with any other HomeKit accessories such as lights or built in to scenes. The lock can also be controlled using your voice with Siri.






Kwikset has integrated several security features into the lock such as the option to trigger an alarm when an incorrect code is entered three times. It also has a feature known as SecureScreen which provides additional security by employing random digits before entering a key code to prevent fingerprint and code detection on the touchscreen surface.

Tuesday's release gives Premis owners several options to choose from when picking out their lock. The traditional model that has been available has curved, beveled edges and is available in Satin Nickel and Venetian Bronze. The new Premis Contemporary is boxier and more modern looking with Iron Black and Satin Nickel as colorways.

AppleInisder first checked out the updated Premis Contemporary at CES 2019 where Kwikset debuted the model alongside the Halo and Aura smart locks.

    $300 USD for a door lock. Can't do it... just can't. That's $404 Canadian.

    As soon as I see that small hole next to the key slot.  That’s the smart key think.  Where you can easily reprogram the lock to a new key.  Problem is the plastic internals.  You can break into those locks in 10 seconds with a simple tool and lock the back up when you go and leave.  When the homeowner comes home, it looks normal, the key may still work but could fail at any time and that smart key thing will never work as it’s destroyed.

    Avoid this crap at all costs.  Go to YouTube and do a search for Kwikset SmartKey from Mr. Locksmith. Watch how easy it is to break in.  Adding this HomeKit stuff changes nothing.

    What excites me about HomeKit accessories?
    1)  Anything that will make my life better.   So many of these today seem to be focused on gadetry rather than improving lives.   "Look!   See!   Isn't that cool?"

    2)  It cannot use a hub -- unless it is an Apple hub.   That's partly because I only trust Apple with my security and privacy and partly because I just don't want to deal with multiple connections (which means multiple points of failure and more stuff to deal with that doesn't add functionality).

    I sure hope Kwikpick, er Kiwkset, tech is better than their mechanical locking mechanism.  There is a reason the KW1 lock is what every locksmith learns on, it's by far the simplest lock to pick.

    I have a traditional mortised in Baldwin lock set. In order to use any of the new HomeKit locks shown, it would mean replacing the door and the jamb. In my case my front door was custom made from Honduran mahogany costing several thousands of dollars. Replacing it is not an option. Until Baldwin comes out with a HomeKit lock that is an exact replacement for their traditional lock set I'll be sticking with what I have.

    If I was building a new house I might consider one of those HomeKit locks.

    In addition to what others have mentioned, I’m guessing this is susceptible to bumping?
