Apple will switch more iPhone 14 Pro screen orders to Samsung

Samsung is expected to receive more orders for iPhone 14 Pro displays as Apple finds rivals struggle with low yields.




Samsung has been making LTPO OLED displays since the iPhone 13 Pro, but Apple has tried to expand to using multiple firms. However, BOE has long had problems with quality, and although LG Display won orders for the iPhone 14 Pro, seemingly all of Samsung's rivals are having difficulties.

According to The Elec, Apple's alternative suppliers have had low yield rates for the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide OLED panels in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The publication has no details of volumes or yields for these rivals, but reports that Samsung is now aiming at 149 million units, up from 130 million.

Samsung has also already ordered more equipment for manufacturing these displays. The publication further says that the biggest change in Apple's orders is to be for providing screens for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Back in June 2022, Samsung was also reported to have ordered more manufacturing equipment for OLED displays. That was believed to be for an OLED iPad, expected to come in 2024.

    I appreciate Apple's attempt to diverse though but the fact that rivals have difficulties show that Samsung is just the king of high quality manufacturing and has the talented team of engineers to do that.

    Not only Samsung. OLED originates from LG. LG as well and it has been for years. Now, Apple Samsung and Sony uses it in addition to LG.

    That is displays for mobile devices, but guess who dominates OLED market for large TV's.... LG then Sony that got it from LG and now Samsung seems to be dropping their QLED and went OLED. Now Apple.

    So it is not exactly Samsung that is root of OLED displays.

    Japan Display and LG made terrific LCDs .Now though they struggle with oled. That’s understandable, given it’s a hard technology to master.

    Im not sure what you mean OLED originates with LG.  Samsung produces its own OLED's, but have been focused on small form factor vs LG which has prioritized large form factors until more recently.  LG uses a WRGB OLED panel, and sold those panels to Sony, Vizio and other tv manufactures.  However Samsung just released QD OLED televisions, which instead of using a WRGB sub pixel layout like LG, which has individual white, red, green and blue subpixels, they are only using blue pixels and using the quantum dot sub pixels to either pass the blue or filter it to a Green or red.  So far, its allowing them to produce brighter more accurate colors than LG, since they don't have to pump in white light(the W in WRGB) to pump up the brightness.  Sony switched to Samsung panels for this benefit in their most recent high end OLED tv's due to these advantages.
