Apple reportedly agrees to TSMC chip price hike

After a report less than a week ago claimed that Apple was balking at paying TSMC more, Apple has allegedly agreed to accept a manufacturing price hike.

In late September, Apple was reported to have rejected TSMC's plan to raise its chip manufacture prices by up to 6%.

Now, a report from Economic Daily News on Tuesday evening suggests that Apple has agreed to the price increase.

TSMC is a major manufacturer when it comes to chips for Apple devices. Apple could likely be the first company to employ TSMC's new 3-nanometer processors for the anticipated A17 in 2023's iPhone 15 Pro.

It's not clear what the price hike is specifically for, either 3nm, later processes, or the next batch of chip production. Apple and TSMC are likely well along in the next round of chip production -- which is not an instant process.

TSMC was first rumored in August 2022 to be planning an increase. Shortly afterwards it formally told its customers that the price rise would take place in 2023.

It is not a price hike. Everything in US is getting more expensive. Gas price is $6/gallon. This is more than 6% higher than last year. LOL

Apple doesn’t have a choice. Where else will they get their chips made?

You say it's not a price hike but then go on to state how goods and services in the US are increasing their prices. Price hike = price increase, and neither indicates that the increase is any way unwarranted.

TLDR — way less than $6/gallon.

California has always been higher than the rest of the country.

Maybe earlier speculation on refusal of price hike was wrong (like lots of other Apple-related "news").

TSMC (TSM) likely provided data that price hike was justified.  Switching to Samsung would have set back development.
Out five years, others are planning 2nm and 1.4nm processes.

Gas is about $3.25-3.65 in Ohio, up due to a refinery fire last month.
High gas prices are hastening the switch over to electric.
Ohio has also developed a lot of renewable energy, one of the reasons Intel is planning 7 chip fabs in Ohio.
I'm running on Ohio river area hydroelectric at a rate 75% that of natural gas (and far less than coal).

I was actually a bit surprised by that. What he does in his personal life shouldn't be mixed with his professional life.

You CANNOT get smaller than 4nm in the Laws of Physics - Do the research yourself.  As for dams, well research that as well.

The spelling of CA is not US.

nationally, gas prices have fallen from over 5 to under 4.

Currently there is no choice. Apple has to hope Intel foundry makes good on their roadmap — that’s probably the best hope for a TSMC alternative. Given Intel’s track record over the last 7 years, that’s not a great hope.

Hahahahahaha!  “Do the research!”  I spit out my coffee reading this.
I did a research paper on silicon for an applied chemistry class back in 91 or 92. I had a stack of books that very clearly and definitively stated that 100 nm was the absolute smallest transistor size possible, but that was just a theoretical limit—200 was probably the practical limit. Because of the laws of physics.

The laws of physics may be inmutable, but our understanding of them is in constant flux.

Besides what Bageljoey stated, 3nm is already being done. To quote your own words, "do the research," as this Wikipedia page has over 50 citations to educate you.

"After a report less than a week ago claimed that Apple was balking at paying TSMC more, Apple has allegedly agreed to accept a manufacturing price hike.”

No verified facts or corroboration, just rumors taken as gospel by those with an axe to grind and all designed to throw shade at Apple. News at 11. Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t. Nothing that deserves 20 comments.

The three word we always hear, ‘reports’, ‘claims’, ‘allegations’ that never need proof, just blind belief,
    you know, like politicians.
