Apple Derby Street has been closed following a black Toyota 4Runner SUV being driven through the storefront glass at around 11am local time. The 4,000 square-foot Apple Store is located toward the rear of a shopping plaza, with a car park in front of it.

A Fire Marshall at the scene described the crash as probably "intentional." In a statement, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said that there was an "active criminal investigation."

"Right now, family members are being notified or in the process of being notified," DA Cruz continued. "This morning was an unthinkable morning, and people are trying to process what happened."

"This investigation is active and ongoing," he said, "and we are very limited as to what we can say at this point."

Separately, the driver of the SUV has reportedly been detained and is now being questioned by police.

According to local news WCVB-TV, the SUV smashed a whole through the glass before being stuck in the store.

"It was like a big explosion," a witness told the station, "it was so loud."

One person has died, while two have been taken to Boston hospital in critical condition. A total of 14 people have been hospitalized, including some taken to the nearby South Shore Hospital.

The Patriot Ledger says that by 11:49 am local time, South Shore Hospital was rejecting additional trauma patients. Police at the Apple Store called for a tow truck to remove the SUV, which was against the store's back wall.

Another witness told the publication said that the driver of the SUV appeared to be injured and bloodied, but conscious and alert, following the crash. The driver was pulled from the car by first responders.

My wife is at Derby Street in Hingham, a Black 4Runner drove full speed into the Apple store. She said there are alot of injuries - my wife used a spare jacket as a tourniquet.

Reportedly, the SUV trapped a number of people inside the Apple Store. A total of 14 ambulances and 7 fire engines were in attendance.

Apple Stores have previously been targeted by thieves trying to crash through windows.

Apple Derby Street remains closed, and as of noon Monday local time, the stores on either side of it have been shut as well. The Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team has examined the building and reportedly has no concerns about its structural integrity.

I feel badly for those who were injured. However, I don’t think this helps at all: “A Fire Marshall at the scene described the crash as probably "intentional." “Probably” doesn’t cut it. People are going to vilify the driver enough as it is without knowing what actually happened. The Fire Marshall should have kept his mouth shut unless he knew for sure it was intentional, which he doesn’t, until it has been thoroughly investigated.

Of course on the other hand you don't know what information was passed between the driver and the Fire Marshall as he was being extracted and transported to the ambulance.  He (the Fire Marshall) may have a lot more insight on what happened than you think.

Of course we’ll have to wait for details but his happens more than you think with elderly or disabled people behind the wheel. They hit the gas instead of the brake and off they go right into the front of a store. Just happened in my town a few weeks ago.

A high-70's neighbor drove through the back of his garage, also thought he was on the brake. No idea if that's what happened here, but accidents do happen as well.

Honestly given the cost of what they sell, and how absolutely insane customers can get, all Apple Stores with facades that face outside should have big concrete posts that could stop a speeding car out front. I get that they might not look pretty, but cars have been used to attack Apple’s stores for years.

I’m sure this is something someone has suggested is likely to happen some day. Particularly now that Jonny Ive is gone, there shouldn’t be anyone left at Apple do I practically fixated on design that they can’t put a few decorative engine high pillars out front. Feel free to make them silver, black, white, rainbow. Just put them there so that the staff and customers are safe.

One of the Apple Stores I frequent has exactly that. They’re about 8-10 pylons protruding from the sidewalk in front of the store. They are sheathed in what looks like stainless steel and don’t look bad at all. I figured they had done this sort of thing at most glass-fronted locations but I guess not.

Looks more and more like an intentional act. Especially since DA Cruz said the 52y.o. driver "was not taken to a hospital" and there is an "active criminal investigation."

Yeah, a lot of stores have bollards or other secure barriers in front of entryways to prevent accidental and intentional vehicular intrusion. Target stores have large red balls that serve as barriers that also happen to fit into their branding aesthetic.

I hope this incident is accidental but we'll have to wait and see what further investigation reveals.Very sad for everyone affected.

I searched it on Google Maps and looked at the street view.  Even the Burton’s restaurant next door has no Bollards and, in fact, has outdoor seating a mere four feet from the parking lot.  And it’s actually directly on line of the roadway access to the parking lot, meaning the speeding driver had to turn the vehicle at the last minute to avoid smashing into that restaurant, with the only possible direction of turn being left, which would take it into the front of the Apple Store, which is set back about 30 feet more than the restaurant.  This suggests it might be possible it’s an unintended acceleration issue, with the driver swerving to avoid the restaurant and therefore hitting the Apple Store instead.  If the driver believed he/she was pressing the brake this would account for no skid marks leading up to the storefront prior to impact.

But yeah, fully agree there could have been a row of strong bollards installed out by the street that would not have lessened the esthetics of the facade, which is set back 30 feet.   But there are no bollards anywhere in that entire plaza that I could find in front of any of the stores.  Typically Apple leases its space and so it may not be in their power to dictate external additions like that.

And I thought it was too much that at an Apple Store near my hometown in California there’s always a police SUV parked in front with a police officer standing there. I wonder if this will cause Apple to do this in more places. Of course the right kind of bollards and/or planters would work too.
