Connection type/speed survey

in General Discussion edited January 2014
Rather than respond by thread to MGG's question here about who's on what, here's a poll.

Multiple responses are permitted in this poll,

but please, only to indicate different connections from work and home

I've included a few more obscure options given our global community,

though with only ten options, Satelitte and Microwave aren't unique options (under wireless perhaps)

let's see what we get

The big university LAN here in the dorm (faster than T1 speed!!!), and IDSL at home (which is basically DSL funneled through home phone lines, making it equivalent to ISDN).

So I voted for "T1 or greater" and "ISDN" even though it should be "Office/University LAN" and "IDSL." Yeah, I'm kinda weird.

about 8 mbit (1 floppy per second or so)

For a ridicules low price of $7 per month.

    seriously, pfflam,

different companies throttle their cable and dsl differently, so it's hard to speak globally

and SPJ, Airport to cable should be a vote for "Cable"...

the "Wireless" option was intended mainly for cellular packet radio modem or other non-wired access

(satellite, microwave, etc). should have clarified that further.

How much per month? I have a cable modem 1700/256 and comcast up-ed the rate to $70 a month. I'm looking into a equal DSL speed.

How much is T1 supposed to be? I'm on ADSL, but downstream is so damn fast, I always fill out T1 when someone asks (take, e.g., Limewire). With 3000/128 (yes! 128 ), I'm hardly lying, am I?

Read and weep. This was from a danish test server circa 50 kilometers away.

512 down/128 up on a cable modem. The extra speed is more than worth the garbage 56k modem account i had which had limited hours here in the UK. Always on internet is the only way to go in my books

500kbps down, 128kbps up cable. I could live with 56K again. No, really...

I may be a social science guy but I have learned enough statistics to see that there is something serious wrong with the poll function here...
