Tim Cook teases the imminent launch of a new MacBook Air

Apple CEO Tim Cook has once more taken to X/Twitter to announce when the next new device is coming, and while he avoids saying its full name, it's the MacBook Air.

Just as he did with his announcement that the iPhone 16e was to be the next member of the iPhone family, Tim Cook's Twitter feed has now added when to expect the next launch. With the iPhone 16e, he specified the actual launch date, but now he's saying only "this week."

Or rather, the only timescale he's sharing is "this week." He does also say that "there's something in the Air," with a very definite emphasis on that last word as it is sliced by a very fast-moving device.

It's just that Apple has both a MacBook Air and an iPad Air -- and both of them are expected soon.

Under Cook's "this week" message, the accompanying six-second video promo consists of a series of the strapline about there being something in the Air, set to a pop-rock riff. It's too short for even Shazam to identity the music, so if there's a clue in the tune, you have to already know the track to figure it out.

You also have to step through the video frame by frame to adequately see that the word "Air" has been cut through. Even then, the device that does it is moving so fast that it looks like a slab of metal.

Text reading 'AIR' with a horizontal stripe creating a symmetrical reflection effect underneath.

However, it's a slab of metal that appears to have a black line through it. Compared to the solid side of an iPad, this looks like a MacBook Air with its clamshell lid closed.

Plus, there is one slim clue in the use of this particular phrase. These words are the same ones Steve Jobs used on a slide for the 2008 launch of the original MacBook Air.

Then, too, the last time the MacBook Air was updated was March 4, 2024, so a launch this week would be on the first anniversary of that M3 edition.

Whereas the iPad Air was last updated on May 8, 2024, with the addition of a 13-inch model.

So the odds are close to certain that Cook's "Air" teaser is about the MacBook Air. But for a least a little while, Apple's happy to have us wonder whether we'll get both the MacBook Air and the iPad Air.

What's expected in the new MacBook Air

The updated MacBook Air is presumed to be chiefly the same as the 2024 model, but for the addition of an M4 processor. Externally, the new version should have the same chassis design.

While it is expected to get the M4 processor, the new model is not believed to be getting either the M4 Pro, or the M4 Max versions. Those are instead to be reserved for the MacBook Pro range.

It would be great if they'd also release the M4 Mac Studio models!   Too late for me because I went the MBP route, but there are a lot of people out there waiting for this upgrade!

So a stripped down model with old peripheral technology costing a ton more, just like the 26e.

This might be a whole new air. If you'll notice carefully, they are not engraving "MacBookAir" on the bottom of the MBA's anymore. I believe the MBA's will become simply MacBooks and an entire new generation of truly lightweight MBA's will be born.

It looks like an Apple Pencil to me. Maybe the Apple Pencil Air.

Maybe off-topic but please can journalists (and the rest) stop referring to X/Twitter? It’s X and I think the entire world knows that by now. It’s a bit like referring to Apple/Apple Computer We know. Thank you.

Why make this announcement on X, a disinformation platform owned by the unelected co-President trying to force Apple to abandon the DEI policies that are at the absolute core of its company values? Why is anyone who opposes what this administration is doing still on X when their presence there only helps Musk monetize it?

It has been ages since Apple had a tease that was worth being excited about, I feel this is just gonna be an existing product just an updated processor. Yay!

Both MBA and iPad Air seems to be small updates. Pricing is what I'm looking for.

How will tariffs affect pricing? Acer and Dell are reportedly adding 10% to all laptops in March. Will Apple do something similar but perhaps increase storage on both devices to soften the impact?

As for iPad Air the C1 cellular modem could lower the price difference between WiFI and WiFi+Cellular. Could Apple bundle cellular with 1 TB and above to simplify the product range? Will iPad Air M2 stay and at what price?

    I disagree. X/Twitter forever.

X can look disjointing in sentences alone

What if Air also referred to being wirelessly connected? They just launched the C1 so what are the odds that an iPad Air and a MB Air both include it? No license fees to Qualcomm.

I really hope they don’t jack up the cost by including C1 in any Mac. At least not as a default option. It’s
just too easy to tether with macOS and I don’t have to get another data plan to make it work.

Good question. The 16e is coming out of India, so no tariff issues, at least for now--I'm not sure how much Apple has spread the manufacture of other products to countries outside of China. Trump has now hit China with 20% in new tariffs since taking office and there's no way Apple will absorb that kind of hit without raising prices. And honestly, the clock is ticking on the U.S. crashing into a recession sooner than later. You cannot inject this kind of uncertainty/insanity into the business climate along with unpredictable and high tariffs without putting a very serious hurt on the economy.

I wouldn't expect much from this other than the M4 with more std RAM (16GB), TB5 and the ability to support dual displays. Other than that, same MBA as before.

I hope Apple has stockpiled a large pre-tariff supply chain to keep the prices stable. This was Tim Cook's area of expertise before becoming CEO.

Now, a reborn M series 12" would get some attention!

Not very likely. Cook is known for being the master of just-in-time and for not stockpiling. He has spoken about it and was known for doing just-in-time better than Dell which was important in saving Apple: https://supplychaindigital.com/technology/tim-cook-supply-chain-guru-behind-apple-growth

Apple can adapt, but it doesn't bring any value to Apple. It is all cost: The cost of moving, the cost of more expensive manufacturing compared to the current setup, the cost of tariffs, and the cost when other global regions decide to do the same. There is a huge bill to be shared between shareholders and US customers. Even when production is in the US the cost is still above current level. Products will delayed, won't ship in all countries at the same time, see specifications change, or they will get axed. Prices should starting to rise now, but it will take years for us to get the full picture.

The M2 and M3 MacBook Air both already ship with 16GB standard.
