Apple stocks plummet, as Trump threatens 104% tariff on China

President Trump is literally doubling down on his ruinous tariff plans, saying that since China has retaliated to the original rate, he is now raising it a further 50%.

Trump's original tariffs were more severe than businesses had feared, they have hit every single country Apple relies on, and saw the company's share price implode, but now there is more. Even as the White House claimed it was fake news that Trump would consider pausing his tariffs, the President himself has announced punitive retribution for China having retaliated.

"[Despite] my warning that any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs, above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation," wrote Trump on his Truth Social platform, "will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs, over and above those already set."

"Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th," he continued. "Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!"

In his original announcement, Trump imposed an additional 34% tariff on China, which brought the total to 54%. With the further 50%, he is now proposing a total of a 104% tariff on all good imported from China.

With one social media post, Trump has doubled the cost to Apple of every component or device it imports from its manufacturers in China.

Purely on the basis of the original tariffs, Trump had already knocked Apple's shares back below $200. It was the company's lowest share price since June 2024, and comes from the entire market collapsing over fears of inflation and even recession.

On the day, as of 11:45 AM eastern time, AAPL is down another 5.3% in another volatile trading day.

Important point to keep in mind: Trump will never admit that he was wrong. No matter how much damage he does, no matter how bad things get, Trump will never even consider that he was mistaken.

I have no doubt that there's an endgame where him and his insiders get rich by tanking the economy, then buying up stocks and bankrupt companies at rock bottom. Everyone else just got conned.

    His stupidity is breathtaking.

It's almost like he's trying to bankrupt the world, with America first. At what point do these actions reach the bar for being treasonous even?

At least it’s finally starting to look like some of his magamaggots are waking up. How some people still actually believe he has any clue what he’s doing or that he’s surrounding himself with smart people have not been paying attention. To think they had the gall to call Biden senile. Maddening.

It doesn't only effect Apple but Google pixel too. This will lead to phones with more mid level specs in term of displays. U mighty not see 2nm cpus. Alot of it was just overkill.
Pixel pro  phones cost 50% less in bom but the final price is the same

They can't sacrifice on ai chips or ram

I'd wager someone somewhere in his orbit was shorting Apple stock and just made a killing.

To think this utter madman also has his finger on the nuclear button. He’s out of control but none of his team can do anything about it. Bit like Putin.

They certainly could do something about it. But they won’t.

Beware an old man in a hurry.

I'm starting to think this really is the hill that Trump is prepared to die on.

Last night I was listening to a history podcast. the subject was Emperor Caligula. The important point was that everyone in the palace and in the Senate knew he was insane. They knew he was making stupid choices that were damaging the empire. But everyone was too busy either arguing on the floor of the Senate, and/or jockeying for their own position/power/wealth so nobody stepped in. I see similarities to today.

Hahahahah...I'm laughing now because all the democrats and Kamala warned everyone that this would happen. I move my portfolio to 95% cash over a month ago because I knew stupid is what stupid does. I'm waiting for the economy to implode so I can go buy some super cheap stocks. Meanwhile, I want all of the Trump voters to reflect on their vote.

the much bigger issue is republicans will never admit he is wrong either
they will defend him to the death
they are too invested in him now, and if they ever admit he is bad
its a negative reflection on them for not seeing it sooner

this is the opposite of quit when you are ahead strategy
this is the i will dig myself deeper so i don't look bad strategy

And all the while Tim Cook must be thinking what if China finally snaps throws an iPhone ban into the mix?

It must be '2 seconds to midnight' in his thinking with no easy way to defuse the situation (at least not without one side losing face). As if tariffs themselves weren't already bad enough.

Now Trump wants the saying to be:

'DO AS I COMMAND AND DON'T EVEN DARE TO DO AS I DO!'

If China calls his bluff the shit will truly hit the fan.

It's anybody's guess what will happen next.
