Why can't the iBook get a g4? 600/700 with no L3 cache along with the other obvious advantages of a TiBook over an iBook would be fine. Right? I really dont want to spend $3000 on my first laptop when I go away to school, but I dont want to get a g3!!!

I still think the iBook is going to have a lot more spec parity with the TiBook for a couple of months after its release, then after 2-3 months the TiBook will get a big bump and the iBook will stay where it is. By MWNY, any machine that's part of the main quadrant will be FULLY OSX/quartz extreme compliant. iBook will get a G4 and a 32MB Radeon7500. G4 will be without cache. Radeon7500 will be without spanning support.
The progress of the books has been that significant redesigns of te iBook typically reperesent a better value than the low-end PB for a few months and then the PB moves on and the iBook stays put (spec wise). At times the top iBook has even had a faster CPU and the SAME GRAPHICS CHIPSET as the PB (witness iBook SE 466 and Pismo 400)
The server announcement should be interesting. If a G4 that can handle DDR debuts. The powermacs will get it soon, and the PowerBooks will certainly get it by years end. Along with (FINALLY) a smaller process (.13u)
So, that means DDR rack tommorow. Possibly a G5 machine between now and MWNY. And regardless of G5, a thoroughly modernized G4 (DDR, .13u fab, etc). MWNY, new Powermacs, bumped iMacs, and new G4 iBooks. Between MWNY and MWSF, modernized TiBooks with a .13u G4, DDR memory, and possibly, a Superdrive (but not likely)
It all hinges on what technology Steve shows us tommorow. If it's crap (ie, just the current PM dropped into a rackmount case) then scrap the above timeline.
Note, that while the TiBook is a very nice bump it's using basically drop-in replacement parts. They just added a huge-big heat sink, and actually stuck a pad on the bottom! This is NOT an extensive redesign of the internals, it leaves the distinct impression that it was slapped together to brigde the delay between this machine and something on the horizon without letting the spec get too ridiculously behind in the meantime.
(they still sell iMacG3's because they can get away with it, but it will die soon too, so there's no point updating the spec) Expect the eMac to replace it by the end of 2002.

Buy a used TiBook.
