Just to say FYI...The power supply of my dual 800 was dead yesterday and an applecare technician was in my office today to change it. When i asked him about the difference in speed about the dual 800 and dual 1000 and if it was interesting to buy the new dual with the new low prices he told me this: WAIT... there is something coming soon with a new DDR mobo !!! a whole new world in terms of speed... but he didn't tell about G4 or G5 or the speed of it <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

It's obvious that Powermacs are getting a DDR mobo, the million dollar question is whether the CPU will communicate with the DDR RAM at DDR-speeds, or throught the same damn 133 MHz system bus. I.E., do we get real DDR, or a hack solution?

I think it'll be real.
My gut says the Xserve was meant to be real too, but Moto couldn't deliver in time. Having "fake" DDR support in the Xserve (just so they can say "DDR") is making my Spidey-sense tingle. I think it was designed-in for a real reason - hoping for the part from Moto, up until the very last minute . Finally, they had to say, "Screw it. Announce."
For MWNY, I think they'll be all set with the new DDR-capable G4 (maybe branded "G5"?).

I think we don't have a lot of choices:
1/ G4 with a FSB 133 / SDRAM (don't think so)
2/ G4 with FSB 133-166 / DDR-hack (good for quartz extreme and for browsing the net ?)
3/ G4+ with FSB DDR (50/50 chance with solution 2)
4/ G5 and the whole enchilada (a wet dream)
In the meantime,I try to do some stuff to not count the days to MWNY
And hoping that the minimum 'maximum speed' will be Dual 1.33 Ghz with FW2, a speedier SuperDrive, Bluetooth mouse & keyboard, new enclosure with a open drive bay (ala Xserve for HD, CDR, Combo, etc.)
I got this feeling that we'll see some kinda of digital device.
Like ipod.
An extension of the idea. An iPhoto camera with hotswap hard drive? Or ability to store Photos on iPod via firewire..? I think, kinda like iPod but with colour display and control wheel on back?
It may even double as a video conferencing/streaming Quicktime device player thingie.
To produce a streaming Quicktime viewer would be cool to me. Mixed in with the ability to take photos, have acres of room on a mini-iPod style hard drive and double up as an 'iConference' tool?
Too much to include in one machine? I'm not a tech' head. So I can only say 'It'd be nice...'

What will is stream video to? Desktops/laptops exclusively, or to an iPod?
When the iBot came out, I was hoping it would stream video to my DV cam- that way I could leave the fragile and expensive camera in my tankbag, and mount the iBot on my helmet for some cool motorcycle video. Unfortunately, the iBot will not provide a DV stream to a DV cam- just to a computer with the appropriate application.
A camera with no storage, but built-in conversion to DV format for streaming to an iPod or a DV cam- now that would be pretty neat.

Actually, my understanding is, that the DDR hack, ala Xserve, will not produce the desired results. This is because the speed of the bus between the CPU and memory controller hasn't been increased and therefore the CPU will still be memory bound. The DDR in the Xserve does help because it is used extensively for I/O purposes, which the DDR hack will accelerate somewhat. But we want a true DDR implementation that would speed communication from the the CPU to memory.
I think the time is right since the Book E cores have been shipping for other clients and therefore why wouldn't we be switching to Book E since that was always the intent.
(the Motorola MPC8540 integrated host processor is designed to provide the highest level of performance and integration available today. The MPC8540 is Motorola's first device utilizing the e500 core; is the industry's first RapidIO-enabled processor; and provides dual gigabit ethernet controllers.)
Apple knows about performance. They have desktops at Pixar and Lucas Arts where they are right next to the compation.
In addition the move to G4 on the low end begs the question....

Like other higher-performance chips presented at the show, the chip contains a 64-bit DDR memory controller with support up to PC333 DDR memory. In addition, the chip contains 256 Kbytes of on-chip cache. The core contains RapidIO PCI-X and 10/100-Mbit Ethernet ports.
Performance of the MPC85xx is estimated to be 2315 MIPS at 1-GHz and 1385 MIPS at 600-MHz. The chip is fabbed in a 0.13-micron copper technology.
